Colle Aventino, Rome

4.9
#27 of 252 in Historic Sites in Rome
The site of Remus' mythological attempt to found a city, Colle Aventino features the Mouth of Truth and Circus Maximus, temples dedicated to Portunus and Hercules. On one of the seven hills of Rome, you can wander the streets and parks of what is now primarily a residential district. Visit the Aventine Keyhole, a doorway near the Priory of the Knights of Malta. If you look from just the right angle, it frames the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. • The Orange Garden on the Aventine hill is one of the most important natural terraces from which to observe and photograph, the city of Rome and is constantly attended by a large number of visitors, Romans and tourists. A few days ago, however, there's one more reason to visit the garden. In fact, it was recently reopened the footpath from the Giardino degli Aranci descends along the Tiber to piazza of Emporio, crossing the buttresses of the Aventine. It is a short route, traveled uphill and downhill, for everyone except for people in wheelchairs to the presence of steps, allowing you to have a nice view on the natural environment of the Hill, on the Tiber and the historical part of Rome continually changing the point of view thanks to the turns and the change in altitude of the trail. A pleasant way to enrich and complete the beautiful experience of observation from the garden terrace.

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
