  • ... because its construction was performed by Rainaldi on the ruins of a small church of the 12nd century, to accommodate worthily an image of the Madonna kept in santa Maria in Portico. The developer, Pope Alexander 7°, so thank the Virgin for having miraculously did end the plague of 1656. Gorgeous façade.

  • The Church of Santa Maria in Campitelli is a Baroque Catholic Church (1662-1728) overlooking Piazza Campitelli. Is one of the most ancient Marian shrines of Rome. Is situated at the foot of the Capitol and close to Piazza Venezia. Has ancient origins, as here before there was a much smaller Church which was later deleted. In the 17th century it was rebuilt by the architect Carlo Rainaldi, a pupil of Bernini, commissioned by Pope Alexander VII to celebrate the end of the plague of 1656. The Church was built to give a worthy venue for a Marian icon in the little church at the time believed to be miraculous preserved precisely of Santa Maria in Portico that is located in the Portico of Octavia the Interior longitudinal plan, altars are the paintings by Luca Giordano, Sebastiano Conca and Baricco. The façade is entirely in travertine, is on two orders with columns that for the first time in a prospectus for a church, they are completely detached from the bottom. To visit absolutely!

  • Infinitely small and special in my life I have sometimes taken refuge a hope or a torment, a cold a question ... or a prayer, in a deserted Church. No matter where. Preceded by many centuries-with the coolest of my issues-that in Rome during the plague sought shelter and assistance in the small church of Santa Maria in Portico, soon closed for hygienic reasons linked to its minimal size. There was a portrait of the Virgin that people felt as miraculous chance of salvation. Thus, the epidemic ANSAmed (1656) already suffered by the population of the neighboring Kingdom of Naples, Pope Alexander VII-in nome del popolo grateful-commissioned architect Carlo Rainaldi, Bernini's pupil and extraordinary Roman designer of churches and palaces in the city, the construction of a ' home ' more welcoming to the mother of all: the current, perhaps his masterpiece (1656/1667). Right where they were followed in a distant past (524) and close (1619/1648) two small buildings, in chapels, belonged to wealthy and influential families in Rome. Originally attributed to the Rione Campitelli (Capitolium, site of the most important Temple of ancient Rome) and later incorporated within the confines of dilated by the fascist demolition Sant'Angelo. A splendid Baroque jewel able to touch in a Rome ' unique ' but less and less respected by new barbarians and eternal fools. In the beautiful country of incivility goes unpunished. alfredodenicolais.

  • Originally named Santa Maria in Portico, the Church is one of the most beautiful examples of Roman Baroque. If you have already visited the two "twin" churches of piazza del Popolo, surely you will recognize the style of that artist, the architect Rainaldi.
