The Spanish National Church of Santiago and Montserrat, known as Church of Holy Mary in Monserrat of the Spaniards is a Roman Catholic titulus church and National Church in Rome of Spain, dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat. It is located in the Rione Regola, at the intersection of alleway of Via della Barchetta and the narrow Via di Monserrato, with the facade on the latter street, about three blocks northwest of the Palazzo Farnese. The current Cardinal Priest of the Titulus S. Mariae Hispanorum in Monte Serrato is Carlos Amigo Vallejo.HistoryThe present church was founded in 1803-1807, by uniting the staff of two different churches, the 15th century church of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli (now transformed into Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore) in Piazza Navona, which at the time was crumbling, and that of Santa Maria in Monserrato, which from medieval times had served and housed mainly indigent Spanish pilgrims to Rome. Many of the works from San Giacomo degli Spagnoli were also transferred to the latter.ArchitectureThe church was initially designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and work proceeded over centuries under the direction, among others, of Bernardino Valperga and Francesco da Volterra. The site was chosen in 1518, the façade by da Volterra being erected 1582-1593, the altar consecrated in 1594, and the roof finished in 1598. The apse was completed only in 1675, when a new main altar was consecrated. The external sculptural group (1673-1675) was executed by Giovanni Battista Contini. A complete renovation took place from 1818-1822.

  • In Via Monserrato the beautiful church that names the street that connects via the Old Banks to Piazza Farnese the first reference point of the Aragonese and Catalans today of the Spaniards. On the front a beautiful group of the Virgin with the Child sawing the mountain, "montserrat" in Spanish means sawn mountain. Inside, one after the other, works of art of some importance are paraded.

  • the church of NS del Monserrato, in the street of the same name, not far from Piazza Farnese, a quiet and very elegant place contains testimonies of faith and art under the auspices of the Spanish Monarchy, which reminds you of King Alfonso XIII buried there in the first chapel on the right

  • The history of this church begins in 1506 when the brotherhood of the Virgin of Montserrat in Catalonia built a hospice for Spanish pilgrims in Rome. The church was then erected following the project of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, later became the church of the Aragonese and Catalans and today represents the National Church of the Spaniards in Rome. As we see it today (except for a restoration of the early 1900s) it is due to the work of Giuseppe Camporese . The facade is two orders and is to be emphasized especially the lower one that is due to Francesco da Volterra characterized by an eighteenth-century portal adorned by a marble group called "The Madonna and the Child who saw the rock" (with reference and from here also the name at the Catalan shrine of Monserrato). The interior is to an aisle, a vast adosis and several side chapels (note the first on the left where the history of this church and its historical references is explained) which represent perhaps the greatest attraction of this church. Internally there are works by Sansovino, Hannibal Carracci and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Personally I visited the church with the FAI and, thanks to their narrators and the usual perfect organizational logistics, I was able to know in depth and to my satisfaction, this umpteenth gem hidden from most. I cannot deny my surprise at the beauty of which I was unaware of existence.
