Chiesa San Francesco di Paola ai Monti, Rome

#319 of 526 in Historic Sites in Rome
It was built in 1645 - 50 with funds given by Olimpia Aldobrandini Pamphili, who (like St Francis) had roots in Calabria. It was designed by Gioan Pietro Morandi, given to the Minim Friars, and became the national church of the Calabrians. The late Baroque high altar was made by Giovanni Antonio de Rossi c. 1655 (who is also credited with the church's wooden tabernacle, set into a sculptured entrance of a military pavilion). No new bell tower was built for the church - instead the 12th century Torre dei Margani was used, preserving its medieval coat-of-arms on the tower has been preserved.
However, the church as a whole was not consecrated until 10 July 1728, by Pope Benedict XIII. The lower part of the façade was refinished in plaster in the 18th century, and the whole church was then restored in 1826 by Pope Leo XII.
The present titular cardinal-deacon of the church, since 21 October 2003, is Renato Martino.
The church contains an icon of Francis said to be a copy of a portrait, along with scenes from the life and miracles of the saint which can be seen in the sacristy and examples by Giuseppe Chiari in the second chapel on the south side.
The ceiling of the sacristy was painted by Sassoferrato, with a motif of "The Blessed Virgin appearing to St Francis of Paola". On the side wall is the Crucifixion and St Francis of Paola by Francesco Cozza.

  • Very close and eclipsed by St. Peter in Constraints, by Michelangelo's Mose; descending the famous "dei Borgia" staircase that leads into Via Cavour, halfway up the staircase on the left opens one of the most evocative corners of Rome, the square that gives the idea of a beautiful suspended cloister and that houses the beautiful church. The church is built by incorporating the so-called Borgia Tower (actually the Cesarini), using a medieval tower as a bell tower. On the front a series of cherubs and the aldobrandini coats of arms, inside, the main altar very scenic, between angels and draperies.

  • The church is dedicated to the founding holy of the Monastic Order of the Least, Francis, the hermit from life full of wonders. This place of worship, with an attached convent, is presented at a single aisle with three chapels on the side and characterizes it the beautiful bell tower that was once the tower of Palazzo Borgia and the frescoes inside, which are still well preserved. It is suspended up there, with a magnificent scenic effect, surrounded by a protective wall, built when it was built via Cavour, greatly lowering the road surface. It is the house of the Lord, and he cares about his souls. I feel the peace and serenity it instills.

  • Church not too big, but if you're in the area worth a visit, just as everything in Rome. Church of São Francisco de Paula is a church in Rome, Italy, holder dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola, founder of the order of the Minims, whose friars still serve on site and serves as headquarters for the order

  • If anyone has succeeded in getting in here could they please say, because the church has been closed 'for repairs' for years, and written requests for permission to visit have been turned down.
  • The Church of St. Francis of Paola is in Piazza San Francesco di Paola, it is part of the Monti Ward, Rome, it is dedicated to the Holy Founder of the Order of The Least, by St. Francis of Paola, born in 1416 and died in 1507, the church gives its name to both the street and the hanging square of San San Francis of Paola. The church is also called De' Calabresi, because it was founded with an attached convent, in the 17th century with the architectural style of Morandi and Calabrian among Pizzullo del Regina, for the friars of its Corregional. When the Cavour Road was opened, the road level was significantly lowered and therefore the mighty wall was built to contain the Fagutale hill (mons Fagutalis) and so the church is on a hanging square, suspended at the top with a magnificent effect unfortunately, the church of Santa Maria Annunziata, known as the Conception, was torn down.
