Santa Bibiana is a small Baroque style, Roman Catholic church in Rome devoted to Saint Bibiana. The church façade was designed and built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who also produced a sculpture of the saint holding the palm leaf of martyrs.HistoryAccording to an ancient, not documented tradition, the church was built in 363 by Roman matron Olimpina on the house where, during the supposed persecution of emperor Julian, Bibiana, her mother Dafrosa and her sister Demetria would have suffered martyrdom, while her father Flavian of Montefiascone would have been exiled and martyred in a place called ad Aquas Taurinas . The church rose in the area of the Horti Liciniani, not far from the nymphaeum usually known as Temple of Minerva Medica. Near the church there was an ancient cemetery, called ad ursum pileatum. On the other hand, according to the Liber Pontificalis the church was erected in 467 under the pontificate of Pope Simplicius. Pope Leo II moved there the relics of Martyrs Simplicius, Faustina and Viatrix from the Generosa Catacombs. The same Pope built in the surroundings a church consecrated to Saint Paul, no longer extant. The church was restored by Pope Honorius III in 1224.

  • I happened upon it by accident and it was a real discovery. It is the work of the first Bernini as well as the statue of Holy Bibiana. The paintings on the right side are by Pietro from short. The tour guide says little but the pastor is kind and very exhaustive. A brochure is also available for 3 euros. It's on the way.

  • It is worth visiting this relatively small church to see the wonderful Bernini statue of Santa Bibiana

  • It is the first architectural work designed by the young Gianlorenzo Bernini for the Jubilee of 1625: it stands on the remains of the saint's house and on an ancient cemetery area blessed by the burial of more than 30 martyrs. The Berninian facade is unique in Rome, divided into six compartments by lesene and lintels of which, the one on the central window is broken. The interior, divided into three aisles by ancient Roman columns, has on the walls beautiful frescoes of Pietro da Cortona and on the main altar the most beautiful and exciting surprise: the statue of St. Bibiana, carved by Bernini, leaning on the column of the stoning and with his face facing up in an ecstatic divine vision. At the foot of the saint the Bernini also carved the famous "herb of St. Bibiana", considered miraculous. Next to the entrance is the original column of the martyrdom of the saint

  • This is actually a 5th century building, although it doesn't look it. Mass is celebrated: Weekdays 8:00 and 18:00 (19:00 in summer); Sundays and Solemnities 8:30, 10:30 and 18:00 (19:00 in summer).
  • A Hidden Gem. Although this small church looks unassuming from the outside, once inside one will find the exquisite work of Bernini, who reworked the interior in the 17th century. If you're staying in the Termini district, it's a "must see".
  • An early work by Bernini with some beautiful frescoes by Pietro da Cortona.
  • Small but amazing church, almost invisible from the street but inside is a jewel, especially because the statue of Bernini on the main altar depicting saint Bibiana. Don't miss this beautiful church in Rome!
  • It's almost hidden! Very nice church.
