Santi Quaranta Martiri e San Pasquale Baylon is a Roman Catholic church, built in a late-Baroque style, located on Via San Francesco a Ripa in the Rione Trastevere, Rome, Italy.HistoryThe church was founded by Pope Callixtus II in 1122 and dedicated to the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, persecuted under Emperor Licinius in 316. Tradition holds that they died overnight from exposure from being forced unclothed on to a frozen lake. The name of the church then was popularly the Santi Quaranta.Restorations occurred in 1608 under the Arch-Confraternity of the Gonfalone. But between 1744–1747, it was rebuilt by the architect Giuseppe Sardi by an order of Franciscans linked to St Peter of Alcantara, and they also dedicated the church to the Spanish priest, Pasquale or Pascual Baylón, canonized in 1690, and invoked as the patron of young unmarried women (zitelle), specially those in hope of marriage. The church was patronized by the Kingdom of Spain starting in 1738 in the reign of Philip V of Spain, and continuing until the rule of Isabella II of Spain in 1856. The church is still maintained by the Spanish Alcantarine Franciscan order.ArtThe facade has the heraldic shield of Philip V of Spain. The ceilings are frescoed by Matteo Panaria and depicts in the nave, the Glory of San Pedro de Alcantara, while the transept crossing depicts Glory of San Pascual.

  • because the saint is the protector of maidens and women in search of a husband. On the facade an imposing oval depicting the saint, the interior appears of Borroinian derivation, on the dome a beautiful fresco depicting the glory of St. Pasquale.

  • The Church of the Forty Martyrs and St Pasquale Baylon is located in Ward XIII (Trastevere) in St. Francis Street in Ripa, 20 in Rome. The church has this strange name, since it is dedicated to forty Roman soldiers who at the beginning of the 4th century were martyred, for not denying their Christian faith. It was built in the 12th century, then over the centuries it was restored several times until in the eighteenth century it was managed by the order of barefoot minor fathers (Franciscans) who added to the name Saints Forty Martyrs also St. Pasquale Baylon and also built a hospital and the church was run by the King of Spain (see NOTE) The churchyard the consecrated space in front of the facade is bordered by a gate. The flag bell tower is placed in a backright position on the right. The Facade with baroque influences, is presented on two orders and is tripartite through lesene. The first order is embellished in the central part, with an imposing portal with a mixed frame, which supports a broken curved pediment, with a coat of arms of the Spanish royal house in the center. On the sides there are two other smaller portals, always framed but with triangular pediment and overlaid by the coat of arms of the Franciscan order The second order with a lower height and width is embellished with two volutes adorned with plume, in the center is an oval frame, with a painting depicting the saint to which the church is dedicated. All overlaid with a broken double pediment, which contains a cherub with spread wings and festoons with laurel leaves. The interior is presented, with an aisle and with three chapels on the side, richly frescoed and decorated with interesting works from the 18th century. NOTE: EXHERC NATIONAL COMMUNITY CHIESE Starting in the 15th century, Rome was intended to give greater organization for assistance and support to pilgrims arriving in the city from the various European foreign nations, for this reason churches were built, often linked to works of assistance (such as hospitals, hostels and more) to fulfil this important task.
