  • On a pilgrimage route and/or visits to places of spiritual interest, the church of St. Nicholas of the Prefects certainly cannot be missed. Not very large, it offers opportunities for intense recollection, open early in the morning for the spiritual refreshment of those who go to work or are visiting with pleasure. The advice

  • Trampling the territory where the old ARA PACIS was built by the Romans, in the plateau of the Area of Campo Marzio, just east of the hnome of the Horologium, you arrive at Via dei Prefetti.La via dei Prefetti connects the Way of the Scrofa with the great Via del Corso and you he sees among the old buildings the small church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. The name of the church comes from the proximity to the urban palace of the prefecture and the structure is small being incorporated into the construction of the adjacent convent. The facade is placed between the two wings of the convent and is presented with a large portal with a curved eardrum on top flanked by three windows on the side. The interior consists of a unique aisle and is harmonious in appearance consisting of a rectangular classroom with a barrel vault and two altars on the side. In the vault there is well preserved the fresco that depicts the glory that ascends the Holy Nicholas supported by the angels. In this church a sacred image of the virgin called "MATER MISERICORDIAE" is preserved on the main altar. This image was located nearby, at a box office of the lot, and became famous when she was seen moving her eyes and crying due to the invasion French in the Pontifical State. In view of the miracle, there was a huge influx of devotees who challenged the viability of the area and consequently it was decided to transfer this image to the church of St. Nicholas. It should be known that this church was also attended by Caravaggio who participated in religious rites. In fact, the parish register recorded the presence of Caravaggio and it appears that on April 10, 1605 on Easter day he makes communion in the parish. It should be considered that at that time, it was necessary to write the reports in a public list by registering those who made communion respecting the precept of Easter, that is, "Making Easter". So even Caravaggio that day respected the precept. It should be noted that Caravaggio lived nearby as he had rented a house exactly in the Alley of Divine Love at number 19.

  • A small church, with a single nave, on the busy and narrow Via dei Prefetti -- I'd walked by it a hundred times but never gone in, until today. There is a very nice ceiling, an 18th century fresco of ...  more »

However, as many of the city very well decorated. ceiling with paintings and stucco walls with wall paintings that mimic the architecture. Curious image of the Virgin in polychrome wood in a niche. Nice tables of altar in ormolu with Motley decoration. Curious especially because of it hidden.
