San Giovanni Decollato is a Roman Catholic church in Rome, sited on via di San Giovanni Decollato in the Ripa rione.HistoryThe present church stands on the site of an ancient church called Santa Maria de fovea, Santa Maria della fossa or Santa Maria in petrocia. In 1488 it was granted to the Archconfraternity of the Beheaded John the Baptist, which began rebuilding it in 1504, gave it its present dedication and made its main feast day that of the beheading of John the Baptist. The Archconfraternity originated in Florence and was named after the city's patron saint – its remit was to help those condemned to death, invite them to repent, give them the last rites and bury their bodies. The new church was completed in 1588 and in 1600 pope Clement VIII had a new cloister built for it, in which the mass graves of those condemned to death can still be seen – they are covered in marble and inscribed 'Domine, cum veneris iudicare, noli me condemnare' (Lord, when you come to judge, do not condemn me). The church was restored in 1727 and 1888.Sources M. Armellini, Le chiese di Roma dal secolo IV al XIX, Roma 1891 C. Hulsen, Le chiese di Roma nel Medio Evo, Firenze 1927 F. • Linked to the traditional activity of the confraternity of Florentine origin of "St. John's mercy" which assisted those condemned to death by decapitation, this temple dedicated to Saint John the patron saint of Florence was completed in the late 16th century on former Church of St Maria della Fossa (de Fovea). The brick façade is noted for the impressive triangular pediment with the most elegant item in the portal. But it is the Interior that houses works of famous Tuscan painters to inspire the visit preserving paintings by Pomarncio, the Nativity by Jacopo Zucchi, a beautiful wooden crucifix, the canvas of disbelief of the apostle Thomas Varasi's anticipating the wonderful Beheading St. John the Baptist which adorns the altar. Don't miss to visit the oratory with frescoes with scenes from the life of John the Baptist, from the immersive atmosphere; very charming the cloister which leads to the historic room containing the archive, the memorabilia but, especially many objects that marked the last moments of life of the condemned.

  • Visit the Church offers more masterful stimuli but still offers the annexed oratory. In the Church is centrally located the beheading of John the Baptist by Giorgio Vasari. The oratory a triumph of frescoes on the life of John the Baptist and a stunning deposition of Jacopino del Conte. I was enchanted by the colours and the characters who crowd the Christ tenderly laid.

  • ok
  • Very interesting. Great guided tour, too bad this year closed for works both the cloister and the oratory. It's going to be for next year, I hope.

  • Suggestive, gathering, not always accessible... If you happen to visit it do not miss the cloister. I add a small detail not horror to what said the garden of the cloister has been replanted with the same type of plants of the era in the same location... A successful example of restoration.. and respect for the place.
