  • "But what is that huge white building? A Church? A Castle?" I asked my friend while Driving on the ring siding at the height of east Rome. The next day I went back to Via della Bufalotta on the outskirts of the capital and after walking through the hairpin bends of short roads, behind a heavily commercial area, I found myself in front of a huge cathedral surrounded by greenery and again Closed. It is the "Church of Jesus Christ of the Saints of the last day" i was gently informed by some young people who stood in front and distributed sheets with information. It is therefore the first Mormon temple in Rome, as there are also in other major European cities (127 around the world), and suddenly I was reminded of Salt Lake City in Utah that I visited years ago, a relatively shabby city but of widespread well-being , which develops and lives almost exclusively according to an immense Cathedral that is the first and main temple of the Mormons. Designed by architect Hanno Luschin, the Church of Rome is the largest in Europe, costing 60 million dollars that have been financed entirely by the tithes paid by the faithful in the world (especially Americans) and for this it is the only religious confession recognized by the Italian state for not asking to take advantage of the proceeds of 8 per thousand. It was built in a 15-hectare area where there was a 1920 villa where meetings were held and Mormon missionaries were housed. In 1990 the land was purchased for 2.5 billion lire and, construction began in 2008. The Temple was inaugurated on January 14, 2019 and will be consecrated and opened to the public next March and soon after intended for the faithful only. The structure at a glance is impressive: 18 meters high with two spires reaching 42 and 48 meters and on one has been installed the statue of the angel Moroni in gold-plated resin glass, is covered with marble and white-gray granite from Italian quarries. It occupies an area of about 4 thousand meters on 3 levels and in addition to the Temple will be home to multifunctional meetings because it will include a cultural center, conference rooms, reception, guesthouse for visitors and a large genealogical library. The buildings are surrounded by vast green areas, well-maintained gardens that must give the visitor a feeling of peace and serenity. Mormonism is a religion founded in the first half of the 1800s by Joseph Smith who claimed to have received by revelation the book of Mormon (which integrates the Bible and the Gospels): The name derives etymologically from "mor-mon" which in reformed Egyptian means "better" . Today the "Church of Latter-day Saints" has 16 million faithful in the world who consider themselves Christians even if there are differences

  • We did guided tour on ' booking the first Saturday in February in the evening. Absolutely all the people who drove us (staff on the road with rain and darkness, in the parking lot, wholesale, the ladies who personally put to each of us the "carpet protectors" and the Guide itself) had a smile. Visit was a little too dismissive but pleasant, first and last time probably. In the temple was not allowed to take pictures, beautiful the baptismal font (practically a swimming pool) and the hall of the two opposite mirrors.

  • The Temple was a beautiful place to visit while in Rome. The Visitors Center is open to all; the temple itself requires a special recommend to go in.  more »
