Catacombe di Priscilla, Rome

The Catacomb of Priscilla on the Via Salaria in Rome, Italy, are situated in what was a quarry in Roman times. This quarry was used for Christian burials from the late 2nd century through the 4th century. This catacomb, according to tradition, is named after the wife of the Consul Manius Acilius Glabrio; he is said to have become a Christian and was killed on the orders of Domitian. Some of the walls and ceilings display fine decorations illustrating Biblical scenes.
The modern entrance to the catacomb is on the Via Salaria through the cloister of the monastery of the Benedictines of Priscilla. The Catacombs of Priscilla are divided into three principal areas: an arenarium, a cryptoportico from a large Roman villa, and the underground burial area of the ancient Roman family, the Acilius Glabrio.
The wall paintings in this catacomb include images of saints and early Christian symbols, such as the painting reproduced in Giovanni Gaetano Bottari's folio of 1754, where the Good Shepherd is depicted as feeding the lambs, with a crowing cock on His right and left hand.

  • Beautiful catacombs located in front of the park of Villa Ada. Like the other catacombs of Rome, they can only be visited with a guide. Personal items can be left in a locker near the entrance. The ticket price is 8 euros, but is reduced to 5 for students, teenagers and priests. Children under the age of 6 and people with disabilities enter for free. They are beautiful catacombs, although my favorites in Rome remain those of San Callisto. Santa Priscilla's are less popular and therefore less visited, but this allows you to admire them in smaller groups, where it is easier to observe the details of the catacombs and ask more questions to guide.

  • These catacombs are out of town but very easy to get there by bus. Make sure to check which bus and to buy your return tickets at a Tourist Office before boarding. You might also want a version of Sat...  more »
  • The catacombs are narrow. There is nothing to see except numerous niches in the walls. A few scribbles on the walls are touted as frescoes. The guide tells stories from the Bible, Jonas and the whale, Susanna in the bath, otherwise there is nothing to see. Too bad for the time.

  • Loved it! It is not very crowded and gives a good overview of the catacombs. They offer tours on different languages
  • This is a cool place. You can have one idea about life of Christians in early ages. Few people every tour (around 20) you don't need reservation. Price adequate, tour in english.
  • English tour guide is knowledgable, polite, friendly and pleasant to listen to. The catacombs are an interesting sight, especially for those who enjoy archeology, art and history. Tip: bring a jacket, it’s quite cold down there (late July).
  • The entrance is a green small door on the side walk. Beautiful tour. Very informative. Catacombs are incredibly suggestive and perfectly preserved. The tour is 50 minutes and gives you an overview of the history. Tunnels are amazing and I recommend the visit to anyone wanting to have a glimpse at Rome catacombs.
  • A fine tour without too much commitment required. A bus line gets you there, and the tour is about an hour. You can likely get there and back in about 3 hours total. If you are a bit claustrophobic, be warned that some passages are narrow. But the beginning is the tightest part. Keep going.
