Bocca della Verita, Rome
(2.6/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
Visit one of the world's most famous and peculiar artifacts at Bocca della Verita, in Rome's Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Examine the famous marble image, carved in the likeness of a Roman river god, and ponder its original use and meaning. Historians believe that the giant slab, weighing about 1,300 kg (2,866 lbs) originally may have been a part of a Roman fountain or drain cover. Test your character by placing your hand inside the image's mouth, which, according to legend, will bite off the hands of those who lie. Put Bocca della Verita into our Rome vacation route planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Rome.

  • This is an old stone mask in the marble that is on the wall at the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The mask has been interpreted over time, both as different gods or Oracle. In a period of ancient Rome is said to have been a manhole cover/drain. There are several legendary tales of the mask. The name "Mouth of Truth" appeared in 1485. Are you near it is recommended a visit, take a picture and visit the beautiful church located here.
