  • I tried to visit, but I couldn't. It's closed for restoration. An important archolological site of the beginning of Christianity.

  • I must say that you can only visit by appointment. I went with the Hidden Rome Association. Groups of 10/12 people can enter at a time. Before entering, we see a video that tells the story of the basilica. I had been counting on going there for many years, then for a series of events I finally succeeded. Remarkable the red coloring of some parts, beautiful stucco even if they suffer from the passing time, however it is worth it.

  • As we were told by the good guide who accompanied us on the guided tour, the Underground Basilica of Porta Maggiore was reopened after a long period of closure. Since the restoration work is still ongoing, we were only able to admire the interior partially, content with a view from the atrium. A fascinating and surprising vision of the decorative apparatus entirely in white stucco and polychrome: scenes from the Roman Greek repertoire (the toils of Hercules, the abduction of Ganymede, Hermes and Alcesti, Medusa, Baccanti and more) appear. next to objects used for religious rites (canteens, lustral amphorae, etc.). Although small (12 metres long by 9 metres wide, for a total of 108 square metres), the Basilica presents the classic aisle scheme with side wings divided by pillars plus the bottom apse, which will be revived later for Christian worship . Discovered by chance in 1917 and never before opened to the public, it was born as an underground building and is presumed to be (but not sure) linked to the neopiagorecults widespread in Rome at the time of Augustus. Reservations are required for the visit, with groups of only 10 people allowed at a time.

  • Incredible! You have to book tickets in advance (months in advance!) through coopculture and you can request the tour in different languages. Our guide was very enthusiastic and explained so much about the possible theories surrounding the use of the basilica and it's modern preservation. Unfortunately we were not permitted to enter the structure for safety reasons, but could only stand in the atrium and look in. Still, it's a wonderful experience and well worth the effort to buy tickets.
  • Open the second and fourth Sunday of the month (except in August) for guided tours at 11.00. 7€50
  • An odd place Nice ruins. Good tram stop. Litter al over - Including a pile of shoes
  • Great underground cathedral i.e. Ipogeo (visit on request)
  • A star to the Romans... of course there is a basilica and a whole world knows it... But where is it?? 20 of them living in Rome... always closed... once every two years you open it?
