  • On the right side of the facade of the Renaissance Palazzo della Cancelleria, corner with Corso Vittorio, one sees a portal that surprise a rich and important three-aisled Basilica dedicated to Saint Lorenzo and Damaso. In fact, the construction in the High Renaissance of the building led to the demolition of the old church that Pope Damasus had fate built in 400 ad in honor of the martyr Lawrence. The Card. Barberini commissioned Gianlorenzo Bernini to rebuild the Church from scratch inside the Palace in Baroque style of the time which is especially the new imprint of the apse, while the confession on the altar as the rest of the décor Bernini was lost when a new decoration-after the devastating French occupation-was entrusted to the neoclassical style of the Valadier. The current position, including the decoration of the nave with frescoes of Saints Lawrence and Damaso, the gilding of the apse and the Tabernacle on the altar you must to Vespignani instructed by Pope Pius IX of redecoration. Of the ancient temple altar shovel oil on board the coronation of the Virgin with Saints Peter and Paul, Lorenzo and Damaso artwork of Federico Zuccari. Another beautiful painting in the first altar according to the entrance by Sebastiano Conca, the Virgin with Saints Filippo Neri and Nicolò. At the end of the two aisles in the left on the altar an old image on the table of the 12th century, the Virgin of Grottapinta (Deconsecrated), on the right a newer copy of the Madonna of the Rosary.
