Basilica Papale San Paolo fuori le Mura, Rome
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
The World Heritage-listed Basilica Papale San Paolo fuori le Mura is a faithful reconstruction of the ancient church that burned down on this site in 1823. The medieval cloister escaped the devastating fire, and other parts of the original interior were rescued and restored over the years. The original church, built by Emperor Constantine, was erected over the burial site of St. Paul in a spot where his followers had created a memorial in his honor. The new church, following the plan of the old structure, took nearly a century to complete. The building is 132 m (432 ft) long, 65 m (213 ft) wide, and 30 m (97 ft) tall, making it the second-largest church in Rome. Farther away from the city center than other notable architectural sites, this church is often overlooked by tourists and is seldom crowded. La Basilica di San Paolo is not properly in the city centre but just outside, I live in Rome and I always suggest to visit it as lots of tourists don't know it. A good thing is that it's never crowded... read more »
Enorme come tutte le basiliche di Roma rispetto alle altre è particolare perche ha uno spazio esterno tutto suo. Come tutte all interno nasconde tesori da non perdereHuge as all the Basilicas of Rome than the other is special because it has its own outside space all its own. Like all inside hidden treasures not to be missedshow original

Precisely because we are in the Jubilee year I expected more religion and less trade: out the merchants from the temple!show original
An amazing, beautiful basilica that is almost as impressive as San Pietro, but because of location is not nearly as busy. The quietness of this basilica is what makes it special. It is emptier than most basilicas which makes one realise how big it truly is. Something off the beaten path which every is worth seeing!
Beautiful church in the middle of Rome. Easy to reach due to underground, blu line. It is very big and magnific inside, with gold decorations. Milestone if you came in Rome
Beautiful and overall enormous Basilica. It has the relique of Saint Paul, which is awesome if you are religious, if not you can still be wonder with its columns and golden ceiling.
Awe inspiring church. From the outside you would never expect what you find inside. A little out of the center but definitely worth a visit. I suggest getting the audio guide there is so much to see and so many little details that would be missed if you don't.
Take the metro here...magnificent barely begins to describe the Basilica. Out of the way but worth the trip. And very few visitors so you can visit at a leisurely pace.
