Basilica Papale San Paolo fuori le Mura, Rome
(4.8/5 based on 3,200+ reviews on the web)
The World Heritage-listed Basilica Papale San Paolo fuori le Mura is a faithful reconstruction of the ancient church that burned down on this site in 1823. The medieval cloister escaped the devastating fire, and other parts of the original interior were rescued and restored over the years. The original church, built by Emperor Constantine, was erected over the burial site of St. Paul in a spot where his followers had created a memorial in his honor. The new church, following the plan of the old structure, took nearly a century to complete. The building is 132 m (432 ft) long, 65 m (213 ft) wide, and 30 m (97 ft) tall, making it the second-largest church in Rome. Farther away from the city center than other notable architectural sites, this church is often overlooked by tourists and is seldom crowded. • Papal basilica with all Popes depicted on medallions that will slide under the eyes and know that underneath is the tomb of St Paul apostle who was struck on the road to Damascus to follow Christ is a thing of absolute respect and veneration for the believers of course. beautiful also the cloister.

  • You will need to go on the metro for six stops, after the Colosseum, followed by a 10 minute walk. It is not hard on the metro, but if you are not sure try a bus, or taxi. This place is huge, and you ...  more »

  • Stunning Basilica with Christian and Roman artifacts. There is also a medieval archeological excavation site that was unearthed.
  • An amazing, beautiful basilica that is almost as impressive as San Pietro, but because of location is not nearly as busy. The quietness of this basilica is what makes it special. It is emptier than most basilicas which makes one realise how big it truly is. Something off the beaten path which every is worth seeing!
  • A somewhat "secret" gem in the outskirts of Rome. Just as beautiful as St. Peter's Basilica but without the massive crowds since it's not in the center of town. Only a few bus stops always but provides a much more serene atmosphere.
  • Just outside the Roma wall some say this was the first Vatican if you look up you can see on the side inside all the previous popes and the remaining spaces for the next popes truly a beautiful place
  • Don't miss it! Much quieter than the other major Basilicas.
