  • The first building dates back to the 4th century, and was built over the tomb of the martyr Valentine, in an early Christian Necropolis. It was destroyed in the 6th century by the Goths, and later rebuilt in the 7th century in two distinct steps, the first between 625 and 632 and the second between 642 and 648, when the management of the building was entrusted to the Benedictines.

  • Is very special visit on the Via Flaminia, at the foot of the Parioli district, a vast area that is already being used for burials by the Romans who began to welcome Christian Catacomb complex formed depositions and the basilica of San Valentino. Named after the martyr of the 3rd century AD, starting from the excavation at this time into the hillside of a catacomb, soon expanded on two levels. The next century was created a crypt, adjacent to the entrance, decorated in later centuries with beautiful paintings that depict rare scenes related to the Nativity, Crucifixion and various characters from the history of the Church. The decora-tion pictorial pours in desparate need of preservation because these environments were used as cellars. The only painting, readable today, is to place in the bottom of a small niche, to contain the lamps, depicting a Madonna and child. Perhaps the body of the martyr was buried outside of the catacomb in a sarcophagus, around which formed an area revered with a small apse carved into the rock, then incorporated into the three-aisled basilica, but by 1200 as a result of the transfer of the relics of the martyr in s. Prassede, the basilica fell into gradual abandonment. Over the centuries, between the basilica and the catacomb, arose a necropolis outdoors, consisting of mausoleums, tombs and sarcophagi, devotees of the Saint, who would in time be buried in the same place. Currently points, to issues related to meltdowns are not open to the public, significant artifacts still visible, because in outermost position are outside the basilica and the ambulatory. Only on the occasion of the February 14 the catacomb is open to the public organized by the Pontifical Academy of martyrs ' Lovers, with the celebration of Holy Mass, followed by a visit very partial to the catacomb.
