Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome
(4.6/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
Sitting atop the Campidoglio, accessed by a monumental staircase, Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli is designated the church of the city council of Rome. Though its foundations as a place of worship were laid in the sixth century, today's church is mostly a reflection of the Franciscans' application of Romanesque-Gothic styles in the 13th century. The church is adorned with chandeliers and a wooden coffered ceiling, and there are a number of impressive frescoes throughout. During the Christmas season, the famous Santo Bambino (infant Jesus) statue carved of olive wood is brought to the high altar. If climbing the 124 marble steps to this building seems too daunting, take the steps to the right to get in a back entrance, where the incline is not as steep. • We were this evening at the top of the long staircase that leads to the Basilica wedged between the Victorian and the Capitol. It was verdi's requiem. The fact is that the Organization foresaw prelates ambassadors improbable mayors of Benevento soloists misplaced and a conductor nothing short of ridiculous. The basilica remains in any case and whatever by accident a thrilling masterpiece

  • Climb up the stairs it is worth, or bypasses the stairs when going from behind the Town Hall. The Church has a lot to see and has been a place of rest for us

  • You get to the basilica after a long staircase ... tiring but worth it! The basilica was once frequented by the noble families of Rome. Beautiful inside with a small chapel with the golden child that get asked the prayers and letters of children.

  • Expect quite a few steps to get to it, but the church is worth it. Gold plated ceiling and beautiful paintings high on the walls. Close to Piazza venezia which you must visit anyway.
  • The Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven is a beautiful part of the Michaelangelo-designed Campidoglio.
  • Very nice church on the inside with a great view on the city!
  • Worth the visit! Lots of St. Helen items in the small gift shop in the back.
  • This may be the most beautiful church I've ever entered. And it wasn't overrun by tourists. Hugely worthwhile.
