Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome

4.6
#36 of 252 in Historic Sites in Rome
Sitting atop the Campidoglio, accessed by a monumental staircase, Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli is designated the church of the city council of Rome. Though its foundations as a place of worship were laid in the sixth century, today's church is mostly a reflection of the Franciscans' application of Romanesque-Gothic styles in the 13th century. The church is adorned with chandeliers and a wooden coffered ceiling, and there are a number of impressive frescoes throughout. During the Christmas season, the famous Santo Bambino (infant Jesus) statue carved of olive wood is brought to the high altar. If climbing the 124 marble steps to this building seems too daunting, take the steps to the right to get in a back entrance, where the incline is not as steep. • Well, it must be earned this Basilica, more than 100 steps to climb when we go up from the Piazza Venezia, along the rise of Capitol view on Rome and the dome of the Basilica St Pierre in the background as well as a part of the place from the Capitol to the Interior, splendid ceiling tell boxes and pretty little chapel of Santo Bambino

  • A beautiful church not far from the Capitoline Museums. Penitent pilgrims would go up the stairs on their knees as a form of prayer. Ouch!  more »

Where to stay in Rome

For easy foot access to most of the city's main historical sites, consider staying in Rome's old town center. The area is conveniently placed for public transport, only a walk away from the city's main railway station. Accommodations here span all hotels sectors, from cheap hostels to luxury brand names. To avoid the steep prices and overcrowding of the town center, explore the hotels in the inner suburbs of Rome. They offer comfortable rooms and excellent food at a fraction of the price charged by the centrally located hotel chains. Another affordable option is the area around Vatican, which boasts a good selection of family-owned B&Bs.
