Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome
(4.6/5 based on 480 reviews on the web)
Sitting atop the Campidoglio, accessed by a monumental staircase, Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli is designated the church of the city council of Rome. Though its foundations as a place of worship were laid in the sixth century, today's church is mostly a reflection of the Franciscans' application of Romanesque-Gothic styles in the 13th century. The church is adorned with chandeliers and a wooden coffered ceiling, and there are a number of impressive frescoes throughout. During the Christmas season, the famous Santo Bambino (infant Jesus) statue carved of olive wood is brought to the high altar. If climbing the 124 marble steps to this building seems too daunting, take the steps to the right to get in a back entrance, where the incline is not as steep. • This is a beautiful church and not to be missed. The many chapels are stunning and the historical elements bring one to feel as though you're traveling through the ages in a single church. The gravest...  more »
  • Vicky and I decide for the usual and mile-long walk through Rome. The appointment is at the Colosseo Metro station, then you will see. Our walk is open to all possible variations. In fact, here we climb the 124 steps to visit the Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. As always I'll write a few historical notes referring your curiosity to many sites in the network. I will tell you the story of Luke, dear Sexton and factotum of the Basilica, happened in Tyre, which satisfied my impertinent question and made a beautiful gift. Let's go with order. The Church is located at the top of the Capitoline Hill. Most likely on the site, in 343 BC the Temple of Juno Moneta. Today the Friars Minor are the custodians of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. There are many legends and customs related to this site. The stairway, considered miraculous, especially if you traveled on your knees, by women (spinsters looking for husband, women who want to have children and also from those seeking lottery winnings). The Church is especially famous for its "Holy child", a wooden statue stolen in 1994 and never recovered (in its place a copy). And now the encounter with Luke. Comes out of a chapel a young man with a bunch of keys in hand and I'm tough (but friendly) that sets me apart, wonder if I can ask a question. Becomes available and responds with a detailed description to my question: "How are washed the chandeliers?" I'm short. The 54 Bohemian crystal chandeliers are washed once a year, but it takes a year to finish washing. For everyone we want from 3 to 4 hours. Are made to descend from the ceiling, spraying a detergent, you leave and then folded, are put into a bucket, then wash and dry. Amazing! Luke is very courteous and we want to give the vision of 54 chandeliers lit. Invites us to go to the center of the Basilica and drives from the mobile command. A OH of wonder of these echoes. Luke had warned us of this. Thanks to this wonder. Please note that I take a picture with iPhone's Basilica lit, but the lights "shoot" and therefore should not publish it. If you're lucky, you'll also get you this surprise.

  • Expect quite a few steps to get to it, but the church is worth it. Gold plated ceiling and beautiful paintings high on the walls. Close to Piazza venezia which you must visit anyway.
  • The Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven is a beautiful part of the Michaelangelo-designed Campidoglio.
  • Very nice church on the inside with a great view on the city!
  • Worth the visit! Lots of St. Helen items in the small gift shop in the back.
  • This may be the most beautiful church I've ever entered. And it wasn't overrun by tourists. Hugely worthwhile.
