Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome

(4.6/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Sitting atop the Campidoglio, accessed by a monumental staircase, Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli is designated the church of the city council of Rome. Though its foundations as a place of worship were laid in the sixth century, today's church is mostly a reflection of the Franciscans' application of Romanesque-Gothic styles in the 13th century. The church is adorned with chandeliers and a wooden coffered ceiling, and there are a number of impressive frescoes throughout. During the Christmas season, the famous Santo Bambino (infant Jesus) statue carved of olive wood is brought to the high altar. If climbing the 124 marble steps to this building seems too daunting, take the steps to the right to get in a back entrance, where the incline is not as steep. • A must see! My brother had his destination wedding here, and it was absolutely gorgeous! The stairs make for a great workout, and the beauty inside is candy to the eyes.
  • Beautiful as the Spanish steps. Above, a very beautiful church with ornate ceiling forgiveness changes expected one. As a non-Catholic, my husband was thrilled by the impressions

  • Climbing the many steps to the top of the hill can be daunting but is worth the effort. This is a large church, airy, yet filled with art and sculpture. Pinturicchio's 15th century frescoes in a chape...  more »

  • Expect quite a few steps to get to it, but the church is worth it. Gold plated ceiling and beautiful paintings high on the walls. Close to Piazza venezia which you must visit anyway.
  • The Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven is a beautiful part of the Michaelangelo-designed Campidoglio.
  • Very nice church on the inside with a great view on the city!
  • Worth the visit! Lots of St. Helen items in the small gift shop in the back.
  • This may be the most beautiful church I've ever entered. And it wasn't overrun by tourists. Hugely worthwhile.
