Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome

4.7
#36 of 459 in Historic Sites in Rome
Sitting atop the Campidoglio, accessed by a monumental staircase, Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli is designated the church of the city council of Rome. Though its foundations as a place of worship were laid in the sixth century, today's church is mostly a reflection of the Franciscans' application of Romanesque-Gothic styles in the 13th century. The church is adorned with chandeliers and a wooden coffered ceiling, and there are a number of impressive frescoes throughout. During the Christmas season, the famous Santo Bambino (infant Jesus) statue carved of olive wood is brought to the high altar. If climbing the 124 marble steps to this building seems too daunting, take the steps to the right to get in a back entrance, where the incline is not as steep. • This Basilica is truly beautiful and can be reached after a long flight of steps as if to commemorate the passion of Christ. Externally it would not seem very inviting but inside lie beautiful marbles and frescoes that unfortunately are closed in the chapels of which high Gates prevent access, perhaps to avoid that tourists can photograph the entire basilica in favour postcards and souvenirs shop within the same? It was Jesus who drove the merchants out of the temple?

  • Wow... Climbed the steps, i tho i got to the dead end, but got through the door and the beauty of Basilica opened up on me. Wow... Its a very nice place, had light the candle for the one whos not around. When you go inside, make sure you come out through the other door, its wonderful. Love it so much.
  • Magnificent church with an amazing view! The long walk up the 141 steps (that's how many I counted) is hard but worth it to see the whole city of Rome spread out before you're eyes. Then stepping into the church, you discover what a hidden gem it really is. The ceilings, walls, and floor are all beautifully decorated with lavish ornaments and statues. It is grander and more impressive than the Sistine chapel however it does still pale in comparison with St Peters. Definitely worth a visit and what a lovely hidden gem it is!
  • Bumped into a wedding with the organ going full tilt. Spectacular setting.
  • Historical place with many layers of history embedded in the architecture. What is greatly appreciable is the respect for the different moments in history reflected in the artistic interiors. There has been no attempt to cancel or eclipse any historical period that stands out in the interiors or exteriors.
  • Woww!! Just wow.. my favorite church so far! A must see place!
