4.6/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web
Sitting atop the Campidoglio, accessed by a monumental staircase, Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli is designated the church of the city council of Rome. Though its foundations as a place of worship were laid in the sixth century, today's church is mostly a reflection of the Franciscans' application of Romanesque-Gothic styles in the 13th century. The church is adorned with chandeliers and a wooden coffered ceiling, and there are a number of impressive frescoes throughout. During the Christmas season, the famous Santo Bambino (infant Jesus) statue carved of olive wood is brought to the high altar. If climbing the 124 marble steps to this building seems too daunting, take the steps to the right to get in a back entrance, where the incline is not as steep. • The Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli is a place that I have the stolen heart. Climb the many stairs is worthwhile. It is an effort that has its prize. The views from the top are beautiful and the interior of the basilica is always a surprise because outside the basilica is in brick and does not seem to be so beautiful inside. By the side door you can access piazza del Campidoglio without having to go down the steps of the basilica.

  • Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara coeli is the resting place of Catherine of Bosnia (Bosnian: Katarina Kosača), born August 1425, died 25. October 1478. She was Queen of Bosnia as a wife of the last Bosnian king, King Stephen Thomas (Bosnian: Stjepan Tomaš), the penultimate Bosnian sovereign.
  • Simply stunning. In Piazza del Campidoglio. Climbing the steps is totally worth it. You can skip the steps if you're coming directly from the Roman forum's exit. Beautiful interiors
  • This may be the most beautiful church I've ever entered. And it wasn't overrun by tourists. Hugely worthwhile.
  • Climb the formidable stairs and soak in the view from the top while you rest. Great spot to eat a quick lunch while looking over the city.
  • Beautiful, beautiful ancient church.
