  • The sanctuary of Rivotorto, almost isolated on the road from Assisi Spello, doesn't attract particularly architecturally (the Church itself is rather sketchy), but still deserves some attention if you are interested in the Franciscan story: the site hosts the "Sacro Tugurio" where Francis lived for a time with his confreres , rebuilt with discrete approximation. If you are in the area, place to be reckoned with although certainly less priority than what is found in the historic centre of Assisi or even in Spello.

  • Discovered this shrine at the foot of the x case city of Assisi. We staid there and we stopped by chance. Immersed in the Green Umbrian countryside is this Sanctuary really very very nice. The mother church is great

  • At the foot of Assisi and near Santa Maria degli Angeli lies the hamlet of Rivotorto, where stands the Church of St Mary, known as the "sanctuary of Rivotorto." The sanctuary, built in neo-Gothic style at the place where there was a previous church destroyed by an earthquake in 1854 holds within it the "Sacro Tugurio", a simple construction which resembles the place where St. Francis lived for some time with the first twelve monks and where he wrote "the first rule of the Friars Minor". The Hovel has undergone several modifications over the centuries, now looks like a very low building, constructed in stone, with the tiled roof. It consists of three small rooms: the room of the cross, the rest room, the room of the fire. They are really beautiful and full of spirituality these small rooms that resemble part of the life of St. Francis. The Interior of the Church apart from the Hovel is embellished with twelve paintings by 600, depicting episodes from the life of the Saint during the time lived in Rivotorto. I highly recommend you check them out. Very nice!!
