The Bastion, Riva Del Garda
(4.6/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
A steep walk up to The Bastion rewards you with unbeatable views over the town. Built following the end of Venetian rule in the 16th century as protection for the town and its inhabitants, the building was later destroyed in 1703 by French troops. To reach the grey stone fortress, you'll have to climb uphill on narrow zig-zagging paths under the Italian sun for nearly an hour, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a supply of water to keep hydrated. Once you reach the fort, there is a small cafe to refuel. Savor the well-earned views before making the trek back down. • easy walk from the Centre of Riva. I made it on a clear day and the view was really nice. The bastion itself not particularly fascinated me, it's a fairly common historical structure. (10/31/2016)

  • Riva de Garda is a wonderful place with breathtaking views and the 20 minute walk up the mountain to the Bastion is well worth it and their prices are very reasonable.
  • The bastion is an excellent Vista lodge above of Riva, which offers even a worthwhile and affordable retreat next to the panoramic views of the city and the Lake (terrace, nice service, good wine). If you would like to not exist, so there still some beautiful and promising remote rest and picnic areas around the bastion and along the ascent route. A special tip for balmy summer evenings: The increase in path is illuminated in the evening, so you well can take with a good bottle of wine and some snacks to enjoy the sunset or night Lake at a picnic.
