The Bastion, Riva Del Garda

A steep walk up to The Bastion rewards you with unbeatable views over the town. Built following the end of Venetian rule in the 16th century as protection for the town and its inhabitants, the building was later destroyed in 1703 by French troops. To reach the grey stone fortress, you'll have to climb uphill on narrow zig-zagging paths under the Italian sun for nearly an hour, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a supply of water to keep hydrated. Once you reach the fort, there is a small cafe to refuel. Savor the well-earned views before making the trek back down. • I'll be gone thirty times (in any environmental condition and weather: rain, Sun, snow, dark, hot, cold, spring, summer, autumn, running, walking and so on and so on and so forth) and you discover always new details, new things I had not noticed before. The route is not very challenging, even for small kids (like said the first time I must have been 2/3 years, nor too long, in fact at a brisk pace is a 15 minute walk from via Monte Oro. Is a very nice historic monument (if I'm not mistaken was built in 1507 after the Venetian domination) and offers a breathtaking view of the Lake and the old town of shore from Rocchetta. Not to be missed; for the more adventurous, you can go to the Church and to the sanctuary of santa Barbara or get off and take the road that goes to Mary Magdalene. Not to be missed!

  • Great heart pumping walk, then a brilliant view recovering with a cool beer and lunch! Also crawl over the tower itself, ransacked by Napoleon, - who else?  more »
  • With my wife my 2 small children hopped up to Rampart and after the Church of Santa Barbara. So much effort, but at the top of that show!

  • If you walk, then you also must walk up to Bastione to catch the views from here. While you are here, there is a local bar/cafe to get some local drink/eats, but the view is spectacular!
  • Fortresses with beautiful view to the Riva. There is a nice footpath, with lights thus visit is possible in the night as well. Than you can admire Riva at night. Must see if you are in Riva.
  • Beautiful view. Good restaurant. Road up to here is suitable for kids, bike etc.
  • Great walk up to to the Bastione. Make sure you wear decent footwear as path can be slippy if wet. Fantastic views over the Lake and town.
  • Great views. Nice walk. Bar at the top. Historically interesting. Great experience.
