The Bastion, Riva Del Garda

(4.6/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
A steep walk up to The Bastion rewards you with unbeatable views over the town. Built following the end of Venetian rule in the 16th century as protection for the town and its inhabitants, the building was later destroyed in 1703 by French troops. To reach the grey stone fortress, you'll have to climb uphill on narrow zig-zagging paths under the Italian sun for nearly an hour, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a supply of water to keep hydrated. Once you reach the fort, there is a small cafe to refuel. Savor the well-earned views before making the trek back down. • It is a long steep walk up to the bastion but well worth the effort. Once you reach the top and sit with a cold beer in your hand and look out across the panaramic view over the town and water, you wi...  more »
  • The bastion is an old fortified tower which rises on Mount Rocchetta, halfway between the Gardesana road and the chapel of Santa Barbara. Partly destroyed by French troops of Vendôme in 1703 (which is commissioned to do the same with the manors in the area, Drains, bow, Penede Castle Nago), can be reached in about 30 minutes walk from the Centre (trivia: a time there was a chairlift which linked the bastion with the area adjacent to the disused hydroelectric power plant, in the early 80). From there you can enjoy a beautiful view on the shore and Lake Garda. Food and beverages at the bar just steps from fortification.
