  • A place where every tourist, sooner or later, end up possibly happen and ... to stand. Geographically has a perfect location, a sort of link between the main streets of the city centre. The square, in fact, is close to Via Cavour, Via Diaz and Via Matteotti where commercial activities. In the square we could admire the Town Hall, dating back to ' 400 and contemporary Venetian building. In front of these buildings are two columns with statues of the patron saints of Ravenna, Sant'Apollinare and San Vitale. This beautiful square was built by the Venetians and is at the heart of urban renewal being implemented under their rule. Its size, remained still intact, were defined several decades after the mid 1400 following the extension of a simple clearing along the Bank of a canal that flowed into the spot where now stands the palazzo scalloped edge and the two columns had the function to delimit the piazza towards the course of this channel. Atop the pillar closest to the palaces was placed the lion of St Mark; on the other, the statue of the Patron Saint Apollinaris, but by the first decade of the 1500, when Pope Julius II took possession of the city and defeated the Venetians, the insignia of the Serenissima disappeared from the square: the lion on the column was replaced by the patron and his side appeared the statue of San Vitale. You cannot remain indifferent, is a beautiful sight and as such deserves to be seen!
