Mausoleo di Galla Placidia, Ravenna

(4.7/5 based on 1,900+ reviews on the web)
Built during the mid-fifth century, Mausoleo di Galla Placidia is one of the best-preserved Christian sites in Italy, as well as a World Heritage site. The mausoleum's simple exterior belies its detailed inner sanctum, which is adorned with intricate, sky-themed mosaics. The mosaic over the north entrance features a stylized, regal depiction of Jesus, a transition from classical portrayals to the medieval-style artwork seen in the following centuries. • Very small spaces but definitely beautiful and bright mosaics. Too bad I visited with a guide in order to enjoy full of stories and meanings of each design or object. Spectacular at dusk with lights and sounds. Worth an hour of your time spent in the city of Ravenna.

  • For a single ticket (€ 9.50) you have access to San Vitale, Mausoleo di Galla Placidia and other (Museum, Basilica, Baptistery, etc.). The mosaics of San Vitale really speechless, but the mausoleum is really a gem. Small, narrow and Augustus BUT masterpiece. The times covered, the soft light, the blue color dominant. To see, for art lovers or not.

  • A small mausoleum, with three large tombs. Hangs down to the Basilica San Vitale. Only possible to take pictures without Flash. A good place to cool off. Here you can stay inside, but a few minutes later you will be asked to go outside. Nice place but not as impressive as the Basilica.

  • #Mausoleo is very important historical place, Elia #Galla #Placidia (Latin: Aelia Galla Placidia; Constantinople, 388/392 [1] - Rome, November 27 450) was Roman empress, daughter of Emperor Theodosius I (reigned 378-395) and his second wife Galla. Grandson of the Three Emperors, the daughter of an emperor, sister of two emperors, the wife of a king and an emperor, mother of an emperor, aunt of two emperors, the most noble [2] Galla Placidia was first hostage with the #Visigoths, then they Queen; her marriage to King Ataulfo and the birth of their son Theodosius returned to a policy of rapprochement between barbarians and Romans, but the child's death and the death of the sovereign put an end to this possibility.
  • Just amazing. A "must see" for your bucket list.
  • From outside you would never expect to see what you'll see inside. With alabaster windows and mosaics covering the majority of the walls this little tomb is really nice. It is allowed to take photos but not with flash.
  • Stunning. Left looking for words, really. What a gem of a place.
  • Remarkable mosaics.
