4.7/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web
Built during the mid-fifth century, Mausoleo di Galla Placidia is one of the best-preserved Christian sites in Italy, as well as a World Heritage site. The mausoleum's simple exterior belies its detailed inner sanctum, which is adorned with intricate, sky-themed mosaics. The mosaic over the north entrance features a stylized, regal depiction of Jesus, a transition from classical portrayals to the medieval-style artwork seen in the following centuries. • From outside you would never expect to see what you'll see inside. With alabaster windows and mosaics covering the majority of the walls this little tomb is really nice. It is allowed to take photos but not with flash.
  • Stunning. Left looking for words, really. What a gem of a place.
  • One of my very favourite things in Italy. And that is saying something. Magical mosaics in this empress's mausoleum from the very end of the roman empire in the west. Perfectly preserved and an extraordinary sense of calm and peace. My memory is it was even better twenty years ago with less lighting and therefore a more magical mood. But perhaps this is just age clouding my view!
  • From the outside looks like a small brick building but inside you'll find perhaps the prettiest mosaics of all Ravenna. Be aware that 5 minutes is the maximum allowed stay inside the building
  • Really great place. Wonderfull mosaics and a park in the near of this tombs. Something magical
