Battistero degli Ariani, Ravenna

(4.6/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Admire the exquisite ceiling mosaic at Battistero degli Ariani, a Christian monument and World Heritage Site. Built at the end of the 5th century by Ostrogothic ruler of Ravenna Theodoric, the structure was reconsecrated as an oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary after the fall of Arian rule in 561. The only remaining decoration within the walls of the octagonal building is the intricate mosaic that adorns the ceiling. Look up to view the scenes depicting the baptism of Christ surrounded by the twelve apostles. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Ravenna holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Battistero degli Ariani and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • This baptistery is a radiance, like the Battistero Neoniano. Interesting to read up on the difference that separated the Arians from Catholic worship. The ticket-the building is not included in the ticket of the Battistero Neoniano, Galla Placidia etc-you buy with a post near the entrance. For € 1.00 of course is worth.

  • See same for Battistero Neonianio -these are all UNESCO heritage sites and rightly so. All 5 and the main museums are all worth visiting.  more »
  • We stayed here in February. Too bad there was no one but us, turned a bit sad. The Interior is dark and gray, at the beginning, then just look up for Marvel. The entire ticket is 1 euro, seems adequate to what you visit: it is a single room, and the particular thing is precisely the mosaic dome.

  • Beautiful baptistery with extraordinary mosaics.
  • Another Unesco Heritage Site, mosaic wonder showing the baptism of a youthful looking Jesus.
  • It's totally free and opens till 7:30 pm in summer time. Not a bad idea to start with it ;)
  • Theodoric costs less than Galla Placidia to erect it (she was Empress, basically). In the Center the baptism in the Jordan River, with Saint John the Baptist and the Holy Spirit. The cult is Arianism, which does not recognise dual nature of Christ. Jesus is surrounded by the Apostles, and the throne is empty (Hetoimasia).

  • The Arian baptistery was the baptistery barbarian population, which adhered to Christianity according to the Trinitarian declination of monaco Ario, which spread the new religion among those populations.
