Battistero degli Ariani, Ravenna

(4.6/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Admire the exquisite ceiling mosaic at Battistero degli Ariani, a Christian monument and World Heritage Site. Built at the end of the 5th century by Ostrogothic ruler of Ravenna Theodoric, the structure was reconsecrated as an oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary after the fall of Arian rule in 561. The only remaining decoration within the walls of the octagonal building is the intricate mosaic that adorns the ceiling. Look up to view the scenes depicting the baptism of Christ surrounded by the twelve apostles. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Ravenna holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Battistero degli Ariani and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The Arian Baptistry is similar to that of neon. This however does not fall within the combined ticket, in each case the ticket cost is negligible (1 euro). Very nice too, though I preferred the other.

  • Another mosaic masterpiece testimony of early ages high level skills for this type of art. It is good that we still have those examples in our days! Must to visit if you are in Ravenna
  • Secluded and quiet, but always in a little square in the Centre of Ravenna, lies this small baptistery built at the end of the fifth century by Theodoric, King of the Goths. Since the Goths followed the Arian cult, which is why the building is known as the Arian baptistery. Outside the baptistery octagonal-plan, brick and coated lies buried, compared to the road surface, about a couple of meters. Where the baptistery from its best is inside, because the small dome is covered with mosaics representing, in the Center, Jesus ' baptism and, underneath, the twelve apostles. The monument is not as spectacular as other buildings of Ravenna, but the small size and close proximity of mosaics makes it particularly impressive. The visit costs 1 euro.

  • Beautiful baptistery with extraordinary mosaics.
  • Another Unesco Heritage Site, mosaic wonder showing the baptism of a youthful looking Jesus.
  • It's totally free and opens till 7:30 pm in summer time. Not a bad idea to start with it ;)
  • Theodoric costs less than Galla Placidia to erect it (she was Empress, basically). In the Center the baptism in the Jordan River, with Saint John the Baptist and the Holy Spirit. The cult is Arianism, which does not recognise dual nature of Christ. Jesus is surrounded by the Apostles, and the throne is empty (Hetoimasia).

  • The Arian baptistery was the baptistery barbarian population, which adhered to Christianity according to the Trinitarian declination of monaco Ario, which spread the new religion among those populations.
