Battistero degli Ariani, Ravenna

4.6
#4 of 11 in Historic Sites in Ravenna
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Admire the exquisite ceiling mosaic at Battistero degli Ariani, a Christian monument and World Heritage Site. Built at the end of the 5th century by Ostrogothic ruler of Ravenna Theodoric, the structure was reconsecrated as an oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary after the fall of Arian rule in 561. The only remaining decoration within the walls of the octagonal building is the intricate mosaic that adorns the ceiling. Look up to view the scenes depicting the baptism of Christ surrounded by the twelve apostles. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Ravenna holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Battistero degli Ariani and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Small baptistery, but still beautiful mosaics, ticket to the main monuments. Very nice pictures to do!

  • Too bad, it is certainly not one of the popular attractions of Ravenna, is a bit sheltered, almost hidden, follow the signs to finding it. .. When you arrive you will find a sign explaining quite exhaustive, we descend a staircase and you will reach u bald, gaunt and unattended environment. The mosaic is nice, it would probably be better to see it as part of a more homogeneous path through the places of Ravenna. Moi we tried because it was recommended on the guide in our possession, but maybe could use a little stronger stimulus to reach the tourist flow that usually you lose these little "goodies"

  • Yet mosaics! That look awfully like the baptistery of the Neonieri. But it's more stripped: no chairs, but a ceiling of dream, while mosaic. For 1 euro.

  • Beautiful baptistery with extraordinary mosaics.
  • Another Unesco Heritage Site, mosaic wonder showing the baptism of a youthful looking Jesus.
  • It's totally free and opens till 7:30 pm in summer time. Not a bad idea to start with it ;)
  • The mosaics of the dome are appealing. Fascinating place!
