Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna

4.7
Sixth-century Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo has been reconstructed numerous times since its consecration in 561 CE. Take time to examine the mosaics that decorate the nave and altar: these are the main draw of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with 24 marble columns from Constantinople. One of the mosaics may be the first Western representation of the Devil. • There is little to say except that the mosaics which line both sides of the nave are simply stunning. One side shows a procession of 22 virgins led by the three magi, leaving the old city of Classe an...  more »
  • Blaze of Golden mosaics! Look good, in addition to the Saints, the Apostles etc, even the three kings (wearing one of the earliest recorded history's pants!!) and the representation of the two cities: Ravenna and class, with its harbour, then extremely important and which has now disappeared. A special archaeological site in class--just outside Ravenna-will show the remains, if interested. The ticket is unique and cumulative to Basilica di San Vitale + Galla Placidia + Sant'Apollinare Nuovo Museo Arcivescovile and Battistero Neoniano +, with the famous chapel. All very special buildings for exterior and especially for mosaics.

  • Perfectly preserved mosaic from the 6th and 7th centuries. Amazing
  • Just a beautiful example, perfectly preserved, of Byzantine mosaic work. We were floored. Really, not to be missed
  • If you've made it all the way to Ravenna, odds are you will be seeing this no matter what. It's nice that they have chairs set out where you can sit and view the full mosaics without having to strain your neck so much.
  • Fabulous! Some sumptuous mosaics. Wierdly the Baroque additions and frescoes rather spoil the effect.
  • Great artwork inside. Was half thinking of missing this but glad I didn't.
