Sixth-century Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo has been reconstructed numerous times since its consecration in 561 CE. Take time to examine the mosaics that decorate the nave and altar: these are the main draw of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with 24 marble columns from Constantinople. One of the mosaics may be the first Western representation of the Devil.   • Just a beautiful example, perfectly preserved, of Byzantine mosaic work. We were floored. Really, not to be missed
  • If you've made it all the way to Ravenna, odds are you will be seeing this no matter what. It's nice that they have chairs set out where you can sit and view the full mosaics without having to strain your neck so much.
