  • If you R you can visit the old town with its medieval corners and passed from the basilica of Santa Maria. Already outside the combination of lava rock with the white stone makes it very special. Even within the Church is beautiful and evocative. There are also several art pieces of various kinds to be admired.

  • Church very characteristic of lava stone with marble inserts, struck the Bell Tower at the Centre of the façade. Interesting frescoes inside, as the 3D reconstruction of the Church itself.

  • On the origin of the minor Basilica of Santa Maria we have no certain information. Legend has it that the first wooden church was built around the 11th century, following the discovery on Pier a cave of a fresco of the Madonna – whose name Madonna of Pileri. This original building was later replaced by another brick church with a single nave, larger than the first, presumably in the Romanesque style. The Church, as it stands at present, was built from 1214 to 1239. The only documents that inform us of realization thereof, are two inscriptions engraved on two plaques in lava, bulwarks – one above the other – on the outside wall of the Church, under the second Arch of a club under the present sacristy, at a height from the floor level 254 cm. It is not known if this was the exact location of two plaques from the beginning. Visual examination of the wall, where they are bulwarks, it follows that, most likely, were removed during the renovation of the building and at the end of the work riaffisse, as evidenced by the cement used to perform both jobs. The autopsy of the two epigraphs proves that they are inscribed on two plaques of lava of a cuboid shape almost identical, they measure respectively: 66 cm width 51 cm tall, the first and the other 44.5 cm, thickness cm 4.7 3.5 cm lower while the lateral faces cm 7. The two epigraphs were engraved on the stone at different times and by different Masons. On both the gravestones there are remnants of a compound used by the bears, investigator and archeologist, to make a cast of the inscription, now lost. R Angela's secret Soldiers
