Baroque, Gothic, and Neoclassical styles grace the facades of the buildings in Ragusa Ibla. A Catalan-Gothic temple that once rested on the square was destroyed in the 1693 earthquake, but you can still see bits of it in a portal at the Cathedral of San Giorgio. Look for the 250 steps leading up to it. Down the narrow streets and in a small square, you'll find the oldest structures in the city, all with carved detail that categorizes them as Renaissance, Gothic, or even earlier.  Use our Ragusa trip planner to visit Ragusa Ibla on your trip to Ragusa, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

  • It was nice to get lost in the narrow streets and enjoy the last of this jewel of Sicilian baroque. Compared to a few years ago (pre-Montalbano) the neighborhood is cleaner, better maintained, was redone on icy roads. I'm a little risen prices of restaurant and hotel guide.

  • Ragusa Ibla, the lower part of Ragusa is just superb. Walking through its streets, with Baroque palaces in the side is phenomenal.

  • Rediscovered, restored and enhanced by a few years, the lower area of Ragusa became an elegant tourist lounge. Opening cafes proceeds in the old stables of the palaces made it a tourist and gastronomy. Get lost in alleyways and stairways is an experience not to do ...

  • Such a beautiful town! The architecture is stunning, the streets are lovely and packet with restaurants and cafes selling a variety of local and international cuisine. There are beautiful churches every few blocks and hotels for almost every taste
  • Beautiful place with lots of bits to explore. Well worth a visit. There is a massive car park which sits between the old and new towns. That's the bet place to park before walking into the old town.
  • Simply gorgeous. Winding streets, sumptuous palazzo's, churches and a Duomo sat atop a sloping square. Lots of lovely restaurants, bars and little shops to browse and a pretty park to stroll around with amazing views over the surrounding hills. You'll need to be prepared to climb up and down lots of steps and slopes though so not ideal for everyone.
  • Beautiful old town - take time to wander the narrow roads & see the fascinating architecture; the gardens offer a green oasis where you can rest your tired feet & photograph the views along the valley. Visit the splendid duomo & it's museum & enjoy a fab Muscat gelato in Piazza Duomo. Good size car park just below Piazza Republica with steps leading to tourist info kiosk. You'll need comfortable shoes & strong calf muscles - but it's worth it
  • One of the best city centers in Sicily.
