Basilica of Superga, Province of Turin

4.5
Explore the Basilica of Superga to discover the tombs of many princes and kings of the House of Savoy. The church you see here today is a result of a promise Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy made in September 1706. He climbed a hill and saw Turin besieged by Franco-Spanish forces. He swore that, in case of victory, he would have a monument built to the Virgin Mary on the very hill where he stood. Climb the church's spiral staircase for views the city and, on clear days, the Alps. Take a guided tour for access to special areas. • We arrived at the basilica and unfortunately we found it closed for restoration. A real shame ...

  • Came over the Hill, we found that the Interior of the basilica is undergoing restoration and therefore not open to the public. We then visited the Royal crypt and the plaque in memory of the massacre of Superga.

  • "the view from the Hill of Superga is bigger and nicer than the hype" so wrote e. De Amicis and still (2019) is still unmatched. Within the complex built, on order of King Victor Amadeus II of Sardinia, by the architect Filippo Juvarra and accompanied by a Sicilian ... distinguished gentleman we refresh the history by visiting the cloister, where the paintings are represented by all the Popes and the Mausoleum where lie the components of the Savoy dynasty.

  • I recommend it. Great panorama view of whole city. Come at night, when the sky is clear. Incredible view.
  • Heavenly. Take the tour of the royal mausoleum. No pictures allowed and tours are only offered in Italian, but it's well worth it. Be sure to check the times of the rack railroad so you don't have to wait at the station too long.
  • One of the best places to visit if you go to Torino. You can see the entire city and the Alps behind it. Unfortunately, the church was closed for renovation when I went there, but the outside of it looks amazing nevertheless and it's definitely worth the uncomfortable and crowded bus ride to it from the city.
  • Worth the trek up the hill or take the funicular. Great views. Some building works in the basilica but partially open.
  • Best view of Turin! Really pretty at night, but my favourite time is on a crisp winters morning (the mountains are spectacular) and photo's will be vivid. The actuall structure is steeped with rich history and worth some research.
