  • A special altar, a mystical place, perfectly chosen by the ancient Sardinians to worship their gods. An amazing venue that doesn't reveal the secrets ... I'll leave you to discover!

  • On a hot afternoon in July we discovered this site, very interesting guided tour which took us about another piece of history of Sardinia and the magical step pyramid of Monte d'accoddi. To visit! Great guides

  • Opening hours: from 09:00 to 14:00, every day except Mondays and holidays. Ticket costs with guided tour: 3 euros. We arrived near closing time because we ignored the fact that the site closed so early, but we were fortunate to find a foreign guide who spoke impeccable Italian, kind and well prepared, which allowed us to a quick but exciting visit to the site. Will definitely be back because this prehistoric altar is certainly one of the most interesting monuments that we had the chance to visit, not only in Sardinia, but also in Europe. I will always maintain that the megalithic monuments of our Sardinia have nothing to envy to the most famous prehistoric sites such as Stonehenge, which I visited recently.

  • The prehistoric altar of Monte d'accoddi, also known as "Ziggurat of Monte d'accoddi," is a large and very important megalithic monument discovered in 1954 at Sassari in Sardinia. It is considered a unique example of Ziggurat of Europe as a whole, and was part of a complex of the pre-nuragic era, whose origins seem to date back to the second half of the 4th millennium BC. Beside the altar altar are two large oval and a large slab of limestone boulders with holes near the edges. Probably these stones had a precise function in the prehistoric rites unknown to scholars today, however, function. In a first phase settled in this mountainous area several rectangular hut villages belonging to the culture of Ozieri, along with a cemetery with graves hypogean and what appears to be a sanctuary with menhirs. He later built a raised platform in the shape of a truncated pyramid, on which was built a large rectangular room, identified with a Templar structure, known as "red Temple", named after the colour of the surfaces of which It was constituted. At the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC the structure was abandoned, only to be covered, two centuries later, by a colossal filling, consisting of Earth, stones and local pulverized limestone marl. It was created a second large pyramidal platform, also known as "stepped Temple", that gives a nod to the contemporary Mesopotamian Ziggurats. The building was abandoned by the early Bronze Age: around 1800 BC was in ruins. Meanwhile in Sardinia there were spreading the rituals related to the nuraghi. Unfortunately, in recent decades the pyramid was used as a military Watchtower: preparation caused irreparable damage. Although the term literally means temple of the Sun, this Ziggurat was dedicated to two Lunar deities, the God and the goddess Ningal Narma. The altar on the tower was considered the point where human and divine meet, and it is thought that there were numerous cattle sacrificed to propitiate the regeneration of life. Right at the foot of the pyramid were found remains of ancient sacred meals and utensils of rites. Inside is a room from the content still unknown for fear of possible landslides to entry; It is here that might lie the sacred bed where the priest who presided over the spawning is coupled with a Virgin every year to fulfill the ritual of the fertility of the land.

  • This is the only Ziggurat, for now, found in Europe. The first plant seems to date back to 3200 BC. It is a remarkable monument that was surrounded by an extensive village, still not excavated, near which you can still see some menir. Another, of considerable size, is placed on the left side of the access ramp to the temple area, no longer extant, placed on the top of the sacred area. Traces of the temple were found, as well as those of the former which are present in the underground part. Underlying the sacred area, in the right corner, was found a building called "sorcerer's hut", in whose hearth was found, still intact, a fine wooden tripod vessel. Near the beginning of the ramp on the right side, there are two rounded stones, found in the surrounding area, the largest of which has many small cups arranged in an orderly manner. A little further on there is a remarkable altar on which it is believed were officiated of animal sacrifices. In the surrounding space, on an extended range, there are the shells of snails and numerous shells which, presumably were important parts of the ritual meals. In the back there is a stele, the original of which is in the Museo Sanna Sassari, which bears symbols of divinity feminine side (Mother Goddess?) believed to be worshipped here. On site there is a small room used by guides, toilets and a small door open on the sides. The ticket office is at the entrance of the site where there is also a significant parking.
