  • The Castle dominates the town and Pontremoli, very nice, offering glimpses of the surrounding Apennines. Houses the museo delle statue stele, very interesting and well equipped hotel which is well worth a visit. Welcome to the Museum very friendly. We should also mention the possibility of staying at the Castle, which serves as a guest house for pilgrims travelling along the via francigena.

  • The most important building of the Piagnaro Castle Pontremoli, so named for the fact that the roofs of the surrounding houses and the castle itself are covered with crying, sandstone slabs arranged in layers. The Castle houses the Museum of statues – Stele, the historical symbol par excellence of the Lunigiana: prehistoric stone monuments that were created over a long period of time ranging from the 3rd millennium BC to the 6th century BC. The Castle originated as a military and remained so until 1790, when the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo gave the community the last Cannon which protected the ramparts because with the bronze was built a Bell of the civic Tower. For centuries it was the central point of the defense of the walled town of Pontremoli, exerting control on the Via Francigena.
