  • It is the main monument of the town of the same name, located on the border with Piedmont and described as the '' front door '' in Valle d'Aosta. This sturdy Roman bridge dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, built in the 1st century BC to cross the river Lys, until until 1831 was the only passage for travellers along the old Roman road of Gaul, built to connect Rome to the Rhone Valley. It is linked to a legend that sees San Martino, passing along the Via Francigena pilgrimage, cheat the Devil: the latter had proposed an Exchange to the Saint, would have built in one night a bridge in Exchange for the soul of the first living being that we would pass; St. Martin did, but the next morning he freed on deck a furious Devil cagnolino...il killed the poor animal, but left alone the villagers ...

  • The description for this bridge is: stately, impressive, exciting, bursting with story from every stone. Below there is also a small museum that explains all its construction, very interesting.

  • Pont Saint Martin is the first country to welcome those arriving in Valle d'Aosta and does so with great style, offering to the tourist's view this Roman bridge single span of the first century BC, wonderfully preserved, through the lively and spectacular river Lys. A local legend would like the construction of the bridge in the middle ages, to the work of the devil, and this gave rise to the famous Carnival of Pont Saint Martin, which ends with the burning of a demonic puppet like under the bridge. Certainly worth a quick stop and a little detour, but for the curious there is also a museum.
