  • I'm not arguing about religious and devotional aspect, this is not (TripAdvisor) the proper setting. From an architectural standpoint seemed a church "exaggerated" decorations which I would describe as anachronistic and quite heavy if not chintzy, nothing to do with the marvellous and countless churches whose Italy proudly can boast. But perhaps this is not the interest of who frequents this place of worship ...

  • The shrine of Pompei is one of Italy's most important shrines. Every year, millions of pilgrims come to the shrine to give thanks to the Blessed Virgin of Pompeii. My earliest memories go back to when I was a kid. Every year in may, in fact, it is traditional to make a pilgrimage on foot to reach the shrine. From all over the region, the faithful leave walk from their homes to get here. When I was a kid, I was intrigued by this ritual, which seemed to affect only adults. My mother and my aunts woke up in the middle of the night, before sunrise, and took to the road, where it joined dozens of people. Along the way, hundreds of people joined, creating a huge, long line of people who walk along well 25 km on foot, to reach the shrine with the crack of dawn and hear the church service. The first time I insisted on joining the pilgrimage I was about 12 years old. Remember the immense difficulty in walking around that time and the vagaries that I did because I was too tired to continue, but in the end, I managed to reach the goal. Since then, I joined the pilgrimage many times over the years and, every year, my focus moved increasingly from physical fatigue to focus on the faith of the pilgrims and the vastness of the crowd that attended. Once you reach the goal, the first light of morning, the sanctuary appears in all its blazing beauty, full of pilgrims to the point that it is impossible to find a seat. If you get the chance, I recommend you spend a Saturday in this rite, which is really memorable, regardless of whether they are religious or not.
