Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Campania / Province of Naples / Pompeii / Pompeii Archaeological Park
Pompeii Archaeological Park, a World Heritage site, was once a thriving Roman city. The famous cataclysmic eruption of the nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE destroyed it, as well as nearby Herculaneum, Stabiae, Oplontis and part of Boscoreale. When the volcano erupted, the entire settlement was covered with a deep layer of ash. Nearly 3,000 people died that day, and the ash quickly settled, preserving the city in almost its original state. Today, this is an open-air museum of the everyday life as it must have been when the ancient Roman civilization flourished here. Among the thousands of objects perfectly preserved by ash are ceramic pots, jewelry, furniture, and frescoes. Pompeii Archaeological Park reviews
One of the most iconic archaeological places in the world. Much bigger than I expected. A day in everyday life in a town in the ancient roman world almost 2000 years ago, frozen in time. Guide is... more »

Stunning Roman city preserved for 2,000 years. I knew of Pompeii for the plaster casts of people who tragically died when the city was buried in volcanic ash, but I was not prepared for the incredible experience of visiting the site. The architecture is outstanding, beautiful use of stone, brick, marble in buildings. Amazing artistry in mosaic floors and wall paintings - frescoes - preserved and restored, shows what a colourful city Pompeii was. Being free to roam and explore much of the city, experience the streets and pavements, walk through houses, palaces, gardens, theatres, brought to life the day-to-day life of this Roman city 2,000 years ago. At €16 each to enter it's excellent value. We took the train from central Naples, also good value at €2.80 each way. We spent 3 hours exploring and did not cover the whole city but definitely felt that we had experienced Pompeii. We visited in February, the weather was lovely - cool after a rain shower - and it was not crowded. The information office on the way in provided very helpful map and guide book free of charge. Note: we did not take the offer of a guide and we bought our tickets on-site. This gave us the freedom to explore and enjoy at our own pace. Final pro-tips: 1) Wear comfortable shoes! 2) There's a cafe/restaurant on site which provided much-needed coffee after a few hours strolling around the stone streets. 3) From the entrance that's close to station Pompei Scavi, we rambled along towards the amphitheatre, taking most of the side streets along the way, and then headed back and up towards the cafe.
You’ll need a guide if you want to have a good overview of what the city was like. Even the audio tour has its limits to explain to you what it was like. There are a couple of entrances to the ruins so make sure you get to the correct one if you are meeting your guide. Visited during January which is a low season and it was lovely to be able to walk around freely. Was told by the guide that during the summer months there is usually a 10-15min queue to step into some of the buildings.
Exceeded my expectations!! This place is beautiful. I have wanted to go for years but didn’t expect it to be as big and as beautiful as it was. We found a group your which lasted 2 hours, it was a private tour and nothing to do with the archaeological park. I wouldn’t do it this way again, the main reason was because 2 hours isn’t long enough to explore everything, the archaeological park provide you with a detailed booklet and map which was easy enough to use. Spend the day here and take your time. Use the booklet provided and save money on the tour!!
Definitely worth spending the time to visit for several hours at the least; there was more to see after our 3+ hour stop. Pompeii archaeological park is huge, covering a significant area to explore. The whole site is a beautifully-preserved look into the past, nearly 2,000 years ago. We were most struck by how similar the styles of art, architecture, and society were to current day. Would recommend overall.
5 Stars aren't enough!! Wherever in the world you are, you have to come here to see and learn the history of this spectacular place. To see the work that has gone into this place to bring it back to life is only an experience you feel being right in the middle of it. Make sure you pre book in with a tour guide to get the full effect and knowledge of the history here then at the end you can roam around and marvel the life once lived at Pompeii.. From my experience here, you won't regret visiting this amazing piece of history! 10 Stars out of 5..
