Piedigrotta Church, Pizzo

#1 of 15 in Things to do in Pizzo
Seaside Piedigrotta Church, situated near the entrance to an ancient Roman tunnel, is located within a cave carved out of tuffaceous rock and supported with hewn arches and pillars. The inside is filled with statues recalling biblical stories, including the Madonna di Pompei and the Angel of Death. Get lost among the stony personages before making your way down to the beach for a stroll along the windblown coast. • The cave is interesting to see, however you missed anything, if you do not want to visit. It must on any to-do list are available. For believers is certainly a nice experience. It is also still not tourist crowded at low season.

  • Little church on the beach that makes visiting the charming and with a return to the past. If you find yourself passing through lace is worth a stop.

  • On the road into lace. Not easy parking. Down a cliff and you access this feature and very beautiful little church among the rocks.

  • Lovely place to visit and nice spot of the coast. A must visit in pizzo' s area
  • This is a very serene and mystifying seacave just north of the centre of pizzo with steep steps down to it from the promenade( good safe railings) which has intricately carved scenes of the nativity which looks surreal in the dim light within the cave. It was the site of a shrine erected by some shipwrecked sailors who survived a storm and later on a local man expanded the cave and carved out the figures. Worth seeing with a small sandy beach which unfortunately is not kept very clean but that's Italy! Nice friendly cafes above the cave to enjoy the local specialty tartufo icecream.
  • One of the most beautiful churches I've seen, all sculpted in rock, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea! Well worth a visit!
  • This is a fascinating place to visit. Would recommend. Very historic
  • A must visit if you are in the area. If you struggle with steps (thinking very young children or the elderly) it could be a little tricky due to the number of steps down to it and then back up but well worth it. They had (probably still have) a very relaxed ticket policy - we have bought them at the bottom before and also from the restaurant opposite - but when you are inside it is breathtaking and to think of the backstory behind it is quite astonishing. I won't spoil it for you.
