Antico Ghetto e Sinagoga Pitigliano, Pitigliano
(3.9/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
Often considered Italy's "Little Jerusalem," Pitigliano is an excellent place to dive into Italo-Jewish history, and there is perhaps no better starting point than Antico Ghetto e Sinagoga Pitigliano. The gold-and-white synagogue was built in 1598 and boasts carved pews, a wooden pulpit, and a Holy Ark. Though the synagogue is rarely used today, you can still check out the venues for the ritual bath, the striking of unleavened bread, and the kosher butcher and winery. Surrounding the synagogue is the ghetto, where you can find a labyrinth of alleys, winding staircases, small squares, and shops. This historical ghetto served as the center of the Jewish community in Pitigliano for many centuries, and is a charming place to lose yourself in today. • Upon entering the Museum, through posters displayed on the walls, you can read and understand the important meaning of the Jewish religion and coexistence between Jews and Catholics in the maremma. I had never visited any such thing I found interesting; you see different environments, from the tanks to the ritual bath, the butcher shop, the winery and the oven where he prepared the bread or sweets. Then there is the Museum of Jewish culture which collects sacred objects used for religious rites. For people like me, he was just informed of this religion, I recommend going to check them out. In addition, a few metres before the entrance of the Museum, you will encounter a bakery. Stop by and buy the typical sweet Hebrew done with the recipe of a time ... is yummy. It's a filling of nuts, honey, cinnamon wrapped in a sweet dough without yeast (it looks like a great breadstick) I had the opportunity to buy it early in the morning freshly baked and there was the smell of sweet that was flooding all over the alley. I couldn't resist ... try it because it's yummy!

  • Recommended visit for someone like me who has never walked into a synagogue and little known of Jewish culture and history. Concise guide that explains the various rooms adjacent to the synagogue rebuilt in 90 years. The rooms are well preserved and are part of the ancient ghetto.

  • If you're in Pitigliano besides the Palace can't leave the synagogue and ghetto; visit exciting and full of history; a bit over the top ticket price but patience, good local products of the ghetto, especially those of the bakery and pastry.
