  • Start off by his masterpiece which is the famous pulpit of St Andrew sculpted by Giovanni Pisano from the year 1298 and finished in 1301 and that alone already is well worth the visit. The Church was possibly founded in the 6th century and originally had much smaller sizes, but only in length. When in fact in the second half of the 12th century it was brought to its present form, remained the same width, which gave the building that particular upward thrust that still is no small part of its appeal. The decoration of the façade has a marble face color that is typical of the Romanesque churches of Pistoia but with characters derived from a Pisan influence, was accomplished, always during the second half of the 12th century, from the sculpted architrave of together with the brother Adeodato. The latter is also the entire repertoire of sculptures and especially the lintel insistent median portal in which we see depicted the journey of the Magi, the iconography is quite rare in that situation, and that perhaps finds its reason for being in the fact that the Church faced the via Francigena, one of the most important medieval pilgrimage routes. The decorated capitals were conducted by maestro Enrico, while the statuette with the image of Saint Andrew by the Lunette above is possibly the work of a later hand over time and that he had already learned the techniques of Giovanni Pisano. In the late 15th century was the completion of the upper part of the façade and covering the vaulted nave. In 1506 were executed by Bernardino del Signoraccio the frescoes of the apse with the walls below, which today remains only the central part with God the father in mandorla supported by four angels. This was the first in a series of actions that they saw involved throughout the first half of the century the main art shops of Pistoia. In fact, during those years worked in Sant'Andrea Gerino Gerini and brother Giovan Battista Gerini, Giovan Battista Volponi, said "the Sachin", perhaps the Sollazino and Bernard said. In the 17th century, at the behest of the Rector Bartolomeo Cellesi, the altars were added along the aisles and were they commissioned paintings by Cristofano Allori and Girolamo Scaglia genovese ...

  • The Church is quite normal, but the pulpit is very nice. In that scenario stands out particularly, it is to be seen.

  • To see in Sant'Andrea the sculptural work by Giovanni Pisano: "emotions of stone and living sculpture can be seen in this beautiful pulpit." It is considered one of the masterpieces of sculpture and located in St Andrew's Church in Pistoia. Are shot ... models, prototypes, or, if you prefer, in Pisa and Siena of Giovanni's father, Nicholas, equally well known and loved. It has a hexagonal plan, like that in the baptistery of Pisa, but, unlike the latter, the reliefs of the parapet are divided by great figures such as, instead, that in the Duomo di Siena.
