  • The Cathedral of San Zeno is located on piazza Duomo, is centrally located in Pistoia and is one of the monuments that characterize the Tuscan city. It was built in the 10th century and was recently restored in order to clear away one of the elements that have altered the original appearance. The first document attesting the existence of the Cathedral bears the year 923. It was destroyed in the year 1108 and was rebuilt in the early decades of the next century. Further damage the Cathedral suffered them in the 13th century because of a fire or an earthquake. The Interior has three naves and is home to a baptistery, presbytery, and a crypt and an adjoining Bell Tower. The façade is in Romanesque style and is characterized by the presence, at the sides of the façade, statues of the two patron saints of Pistoia, San Zeno and St. James. At the turn of the centuries XVI and XVII° important changes were made to the building structure, with the Elimination of the old medieval choir apse was turned into a Baroque Tribune, and was built once covering the nave. Among the various chapels inside the duomo is one of the most important is undoubtedly the crucifix Chapel, which houses the altar of San Jacopo, made of silver foil embossing, built in the late 13th century and operates most wondrous and unique. Many are works of considerable interest within the Cathedral. Of great interest are the works located opposite the façade, especially the Ark of Sant'Atto and three marble bas-reliefs made by pupils of Giovanni di Agostino da Siena. Very interesting is also the crucifix by Coppo di Marcovaldo.

  • To visit together to the baptistery located within walking distance. Be sure to climb the Bell Tower of the clock, if you suffer from Vertigo. It's worth it.

  • We popped in Pistoia for days do and we moved on to visit the Cathedral. Although Pistoia is not renowned as other Tuscan cities the Cathedral represents a jewel of architecture with its beautiful white and green marble in the Romanesque style. Don't miss the baptistery located in front of the Cathedral. Really a treat.

  • Beautiful
  • Understood in Pistoia on a Saturday morning. I decide to visit the Cathedral. Just look cheesy stalls in piazza cluttered worthy of a suburban market. Dear Greeneries hunted your politicians unworthy to administer such beauty scarred by invasive junk Saturday. This square is not only of Pistoia but of all humanity.
