  • The construction of the basilica of our Lady of humility is already attested in ecclesial documents in the 13th century but seems to date back to the 12th century. Its architectural importance is due primarily to the sixteenth-century dome created by Giorgio Vasari and 59 meters high. The structure is also known as a major center of Marian devotion mainly and for this is also the name of the shrine of our Lady of humility. The basilica is one of the buildings under various architectural, urban and religious profiles better identifies with the story and picture of Pistoia. The Interior of the basilica is filled with works of art that adorn the six altars places around the large circular compartment on which stands the dome and the chancel designed by pistoiese Jacopo Andy LAFERRIERE. The vestibule, occupying the place on which the medieval church once stood, was enriched by large fresco in tiles since 1720. The octagonal structure is of Corinthian order and is preceded by a vestibule or entrance hall with vaulted ceilings decorated with rosettes and a small central dome. The Octagon is dominated by the imposing dome built by Vasari and is decorated with three architectural orders into the drum and from a floor of marble of various colours. The complete six side altars with ornate arches that frame the sumptuous paintings, works by Florentine artists of ' 500. The balustrade, which was built in 1597 with bronze balusters, surrounds a marble altar frontal operates in 1612 by sculptor Pietro Tacca and architect Andy LAFERRIERE. At the center of the altar frontal was translated the Holy picture. In the apse, is worthy of the painting work executed in 1493 by the painter Bernardino del Signoraccio, from the monastery of St. Mercuriale and depicting the Madonna and child with Saints Mercurial and blessed.

  • Basilica overlooking a street less so 3 metres, its Majesty prevents good pictures. The human eye can enjoy this facility. Beautiful interiors. This basilica that is topped by the dome that can be seen from afar

  • All the churches of Pistoia seem to lack a certain charm. All a bit remains, and it could even be positive. But in the end, we are used to these churches so decorated and so rich, that when we see a nearly normal, it seems devoid of charm. Too bad.

  • On our way from Piazza Duomo, trying to find the way back to our car, a duome appeared at the end of a small street - and urged us to find out what it was. (We hardly ever use a tourist guide when we visit places and so we risk to miss something - or be surprised to discover something amazing). And it was astonishing, the Basilica which, somehow hidden behind the houses, opened up. I took some pics from inside, but the photos hardly can show what we experienced here.
  • Spacious interior really gives the empty space and scale for humility. You feel small inside. Which was the whole point. Large paintings adorn the circular design. Worthy of a visit.
