  • Not always easy to find, but if you happen, go for it ... it's impressive, stands in front of the Cathedral

  • The name comes from the ancient Church of Santa Maria in Court built in Lombard times and which took place. Its octagonal shapes today's reconstruction was begun in the year 1301. The project is attributed to Nicola Pisano fairly arbitrary but, on the basis of valid documents, has followed the work until 1361. The baptistery, which collects itself Florentine and Sienese elements pisani is considered among the best expressions of the Tuscan Gothic. The exterior is completely covered in white and green marble and has three portals decorated with bas-reliefs and sculpted in marble. The main portal has an unusual structure because it is surmounted by a triangular pediment with a rosette lace pattern at the Center. The pyramid that makes up the dome is preceded by a blind Loggia shaped top and an ambulatory surrounded by a balustrade in twisted columns, while the angular pillars culminate into rich pinnacles. The lantern on the top of the dome has an octagonal floor plan similar to that of the underlying baptistery. The imposing monument reaches as a whole the height of approximately 40 metres. As far as the Interior shows the terracotta tiles of the baptismal font that stand out if compared with the simplicity of the surrounding environment. The restoration carried out in the year 1975 revealed in 1226 as baptismal date of execution and the author's name, Lanfranco from Como. Since the middle ages, in front of the baptistery, on Saturday held a weekly market.

  • Don't expect anything. This is a very basic structure similar to the baptistery of Parma, bare interior with a central pool and a nice wooden sacred representation. Most high, almost gives sense of Vertigo. Quick visit, but to do.
