Piazza dei Cavalieri, Pisa

#5 of 174 in Things to do in Pisa
Appreciate the architecture of the palaces, churches, and statues in vast, open Piazza dei Cavalieri. Behind the statue and fountain of Cosimo I stands the Palazzo della Carovana dei Cavalieri, which now houses the Scuola Normale Superiore, the elite university founded by Napoleon Bonaparte. • The second largest, the significance and beauty of the area of the city. Is just 500 metres from Piazza dei Miracoli and the River Arno is easily reached Via Curtatone e Montanara. Since the 12th century, the area became a center of urban life, and in the year 1406 it was proclaimed the independence of Pisa. In the mid-16th century the square was rebuilt by the architect Giorgio Vasari. All the buildings on it, changed their appearance, so that the current architectural ensemble is his merit. The most notable building in Piazza dei Cavalieri is, of course, Palazzo della Caravan (Palazzo della Carovana), Palace of the Knights. It also has reconstructed and Vasari created the magnificent façade in the technique of Sgraffito. In front of the Palace is a monument to Cosimo I de ' Medici. On both sides of Caravan Palace are still two notable buildings are Palazzo del Orolodzho (Palazzo dell Orologio) or the clock tower and the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri, which too was designed by Vasari. The remaining buildings of the square seemed outwardly less interesting. Curiously, on the walls of many of them marked red Maltese crosses. The area is almost deserted by tourists on her unit, not seen even students, with many buildings brought to school. It is quite large in size, so that the photograph was only in parts.

  • Stunning architecture, 5 minutes from the tower. It was pouring down when we were visiting so didn't hang around too long.  more »

  • Great place! I'm on Holiday from Australia and I just was walking through Piazza dei Cavalieri when I saw "ECO friendly city tour" waiting. I was interested and found out that for just €10 I could get a 1 hour tour of Pisa in an electric vehicle to all the 'must go places'. I was surprised and once I heard it was just €10 for adults and free for under 14yrs, I couldn't resist. The tour was amazing and really well structured. It was money well spent! I totally recomend this tour of Pisa, I learnt so much and the guide was so friendly and open. They also do the tour in about 6 other languages too. Thanks so much for a great day.
