  • The building which now houses the Museum of the opera del Duomo was originally the residence of the canons, whose presence dates back to the early 9th century the eal. The cloister was completed towards the middle of the 13th century, while the rectory was completed later. Over the centuries the building was used for various purposes, it also became a convent of cloistered nuns, undergoing many changes compared to the original construction. It is only thanks to the architectural restoration carried out in the eighties of the twentieth century that it is possible to have a fairly accurate vision of the history of this building and that you can recognize the oldest structures. The Museum contains much of flourishing sculpture produced in Pisa between the 11th and 14th centuries, but also much of Roman materials used in buildings of piazza del duomo, overt demonstration of significant practice of reemployment in use in the middle ages. All these materials are located alongside the works of sculptors active in Romanesque and Gothic Cathedral yard. In particular are admired the works of Nicola Pisano and his workshop, notably by Giovanni Pisano, are sculptures from the baptistery and the Cathedral façade (in buildings replaced by copies). The senese Tino di Camaino, who directed the yard after the dismissal of John, are a large number of works, including the celebrated group of the parade of Emperor Henry VII, which shows visually the tumultuous political events of Pisa in the 14th century. Among the sculptures of great value is the monumental crucifix French production of the 12th century, forming part of a Deposition, kind of sculpture whose presence is rare in Italy. The Museum also preserves manuscripts of liturgical use, dating from the 12th and 15th centuries, and objects belonging to the treasure of the Cathedral, including Limoges enamel and ivory and reliquaries, vestments fabrics and the renowned ivory statue sculpted by Giovanni Pisano. To visit us better plan the visit, recommend buying the ticket for a complete tour of all the monuments.

  • A very impressive building with fabulous murals although many still undergoing restoration. Special displays help understand the history of this Museo.
  • Originally a residence of the canons of the Cathedral who resided here until the early seventeenth century. Later became a museum to exhibit works of different epochs from monuments in Piazza dei Miracoli. Inside, in as many as twenty-three salt is stored the Cathedral treasure, a collection of gold, silver, vestments, liturgical, Egyptian, Etruscan and Roman codes.
