Leaning tower Pisa, Pisa

#1 of 196 in Things to do in Pisa
Leaning tower Pisa is known worldwide for its unintended tilt to one side. For a rewarding view, climb to the top. Designed to stand upright but built with a faulty foundation on unstable soil, this freestanding bell tower began to lean long before construction was finished. The tilt gradually increased until the structure was stabilized. The leaning was partially corrected by massive restoration efforts in the 20th century. Tilting precariously for centuries, the top of the tower has been displaced about 4 m (13 ft) from where it would be if the structure were perfectly vertical. Climbing the tower requires a reservation-based ticket, best purchased well in advance to avoid a wait. You can buy a same-day ticket that allows you to enter at a specific time, usually one to two hours after the purchase time. • The anxiety to see it from several blocks before reaching it makes that one can already imagine the dimensions of the tower. It is unusual to see tourists doing the famous photograph holding the Tower, which is even funny and becomes a story about the trip. Not stop overshadow the visit for this reason. Honestly it gives great pleasure to see it and appreciate it closely, and becomes amazing to understand why it has this inclination.

  • Honestly, I wasn't expecting much. Every ody has heard of it and has expectations, but the actual space was surprisingly cool. Really nice courtyard with beautiful buildings and the tower itself is on...  more »

  • Fun place to visit for an afternoon. Everyone there was doing “the pose.” Lots of fun people watching in the area. I didn’t go up to the tower but I’d imagine the view would be quite lovely from above. Must-see if you’re in the area or passing through. Check out some of the fine sculptural details on the exterior of all of these buildings. Lovely creatures, animals, mosaics, and so much more that shows the skills these artists had!
  • This was so much more than I had anticipated and was such a lovely surprise !! There is plenty of parking close by on side streets tho you may be asked for a euro or 2 to have your vehicle watched. When you enter, save some time and head directly to the ticketing office- you can get an all entry pass that includes the tower, the museum, the baptismal, and the cemetery , but as we did not have the time for the museum nor the energy to climb 470 steps, we went for the cheaper option and stuck to the lower buildings. Extremely clean, well kept landmark so worth the visit!
  • It's always hard for an iconic image to live up to the hype but this is a beautiful place and a nice way to spend some time. The setting is beautiful and the tower 8s surrounded by other lovely buildings. Well worth a visit, don't forget to take a photo of yourself holding the tower up, that's obligatory for any visiting tourist.
  • Unique place in the world. If you are in Italy you must definitely visit this tower. There is no need to climb up. All it's beauty is from outside. Also don't forget to take a photo as like you holding the tower from beside. The tower is 20 min walk from central station.
  • A very beautiful landmark located at Pisa near Florence. This landmark is rich with history. A very well maintained place for tourists. This place is very clean and green at the same time. If you are planning to visit Florence, you cannot simply miss to plan a tour for visiting this place. The scenery was very beautiful. The weather was pleasant;it was made possible to produce a good quality of photos.
