Duomo di Pisa, Pisa

4.6
#1 of 7 in Historic Sites in Pisa
Standing tall in Pisa's most famous square, Duomo di Pisa is a medieval cathedral dating to 1064. The church has a distinctive Pisan-Romanesque style with noticeable Byzantine influences. Admire the black-and-white marble interior, and look up at the gilded ceiling and the frescoed dome. The frescoes had to be redone after a fire in 1595 that ruined much of the cathedral's Renaissance artworks. The 14th-century mosaic in the apse survived the fire. Look for the sarcophagus of St. Ranieri, Pisa's patron saint. Make Duomo di Pisa part of your personalized Pisa itinerary using our Pisa holiday planner.

We went in on a baking hot day but it was thankfully cool inside. The buildings architecture is beautiful but here are some quirky geometries here and there from the outside. The inside is an impressi...  more »

Here is the Pisan conjugate by Buscheto, Rainald, Pisano and Cimabue to make their way through the maze of marble blocks and in the figures that inhabit this wonder of man.

Inside the cathedral is as good as any I've seen with paintings and sculptures and stained glass windows and 3 alters ( far better than the cathedral at florence ). As with all Italian cathedral's there is a dress code. No shorts higher than knee length and bare shoulders. They did provide paper shawls (free of charge) for bare shouldered people to wear. The fee for entry is free when a baptistery or tower ticket is purchased. If going up the leaning tower it is best to book your time slot.

Love love love the Cattedrale of Pisa! The best thing to visit on the square and a good respite from the blazing afternoon sun. Very nice paintings with great information in English. I think this is our favourite place in all of Pisa.

Beautiful cathedral on Piazza Del Duomo with an amazing ceiling. You can enter the cathedral for free if you buy ticket for the baptistery or the leaning tower. It is worth visiting and the little shade and cool air inside is just extra on a hot day.
