Battistero, Pisa

4.4
#2 of 7 in Historic Sites in Pisa
The construction of Battistero, the largest baptistery in Italy, started in 1152 but unsurprisingly considering its size wasn’t finished until 1363. Take in the imposing 55 m (180 ft) building with its circumference of 107 m (352 ft). Observe how the building leans 0.6 degrees towards Pisa's cathedral. It was built on the same unstable sand as the famous leaning tower. The grand exterior architecture transitions from Romanesque style in the lower section to Gothic in the higher section. Inside the baptistery are stained-glass windows and a bronze statue of Saint John the Baptist. On two of the pillars, look for the signature of Diotisalvi, who designed the building. The largest Baptistry in Europe than by his Majesty shown in elegant refinement gift by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, a treat that only Italy can boast.

We came as a group organised by our cruise ship. We had a guided tour and enjoyed every minute. Although there were thousands outside in the area around here, we were not rushed or over crowded in her...  more »

  • Buy a ticket to visit Battistero as this is worth every penny you spend. There is a gallery upstairs which gives you a 360 degree around the area as well. Also keep an eye out as sometimes the guards lock the doors and makes echoes which sounds beautiful.
The frightening leaning tower is really very inclined, to climb you need to be careful and to come down the board to lean on the walls ... but once up there..there is a breathtaking view and at the point where it is more inclined it is a bit scary (Not recommended for claustrophobic and dizziness) and I recommend grip shoes ... Absolutely recommended!
  • Wonderful place with amazing acoustics. Unfortunately my dad -who is in his late 80s and quite disinhibited- started clapping his hands to test the echoes and immediately we were thrown out of the building. So my advice is to enjoy quietly, and not to take an embarrassing dad with you (I am glad I took my dad here though)
  • Iknow you came for the tower here but this might be worth a look as well
  • Great construction and interior is amazing and very old historical place.
