Piazza Pio II, Pienza

(4.6/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Explore the World Heritage-listed heart of a 15th-century Renaissance town at Piazza Pio II. The town square played a revolutionary role as the first application of the Renaissance Humanist concept of urban design. Pope Pius II's 1459 decision to rebuild Pienza included the addition of this central city square. The concept of the planned "ideal town" would go on to play a significant role in subsequent urban development. The square connects the three ruling powers of the historical city--civic, religious, and trading interests. Take in the architecture, and then stop by a local cafe. • From Chianciano we moved to tour in Pienza. The town is well kept and it shows piazza Pio II on everything. the only flaw is the lack of tourists and therefore the little restaurants and hotels opened. Too bad. Three years ago in the same period was a different story. now the months of January and February (celebrating Valentines day) seem to be dead for the inhabitants ' own admission. A real shame not to live the romantic atmosphere of a few years ago.

  • A wonder you can walk and breathe in a past world that unfortunately will never come back but who left to posterity wonderful tracks

  • In this square overlook some of the main monuments in Pienza. Well kept, as all the historical center of the village

  • The town of Pienza is considered the embodiment of the Renaissance utopia of the ideal city. Get the recognition of UNESCO in 1996
  • Cute little town. Worth a stroll if you're in the area.
  • Pienza is magical. The square in question is only one element of this small favor box placed at the center of the Sienese hills, among the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Notably here even the facade of the Cathedral, Wells etc. comfortable seating to enjoy a break and refreshment especially on hot days

  • Pienza is one of the most beautiful places of Tuscany. Pope Pio II was there short time living. The splendor can be seen in the Church. Pienza itself is worth a detour, but do it outside the tourist season.

  • The Church also has the function to determine the date and time: on the summer solstice the shadow falls on one point of the square is identified with a circle. In the adjacent Town Hall there is a panel with the explanation.
