Piazza Pio II, Pienza

(4.6/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Explore the World Heritage-listed heart of a 15th-century Renaissance town at Piazza Pio II. The town square played a revolutionary role as the first application of the Renaissance Humanist concept of urban design. Pope Pius II's 1459 decision to rebuild Pienza included the addition of this central city square. The concept of the planned "ideal town" would go on to play a significant role in subsequent urban development. The square connects the three ruling powers of the historical city--civic, religious, and trading interests. Take in the architecture, and then stop by a local cafe. • Symbol of Pienza the piazza Pio II is the heart of the city, on it facing the monuments that no longer represent the country. A tourist destination for that honestly has lost some sense of reason in my opinion is open to visitors in spring, not too hot but with wonderful days. Also worth seeing are the landscapes that the walls are open to view.

  • The charm and history that is felt in this square is unique in the world is not to be missed, with the façade flanked in spectacular style with the Borgia Palace on one side and the Piccolomini Palace on the other side.

  • The town of Pienza is considered the embodiment of the Renaissance utopia of the ideal city. Get the recognition of UNESCO in 1996
  • Cute little town. Worth a stroll if you're in the area.
  • Pienza is magical. The square in question is only one element of this small favor box placed at the center of the Sienese hills, among the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Notably here even the facade of the Cathedral, Wells etc. comfortable seating to enjoy a break and refreshment especially on hot days

  • Pienza is one of the most beautiful places of Tuscany. Pope Pio II was there short time living. The splendor can be seen in the Church. Pienza itself is worth a detour, but do it outside the tourist season.

  • The Church also has the function to determine the date and time: on the summer solstice the shadow falls on one point of the square is identified with a circle. In the adjacent Town Hall there is a panel with the explanation.
