Piazza Pio II, Pienza

4.6
Explore the World Heritage-listed heart of a 15th-century Renaissance town at Piazza Pio II. The town square played a revolutionary role as the first application of the Renaissance Humanist concept of urban design. Pope Pius II's 1459 decision to rebuild Pienza included the addition of this central city square. The concept of the planned "ideal town" would go on to play a significant role in subsequent urban development. The square connects the three ruling powers of the historical city--civic, religious, and trading interests. Take in the architecture, and then stop by a local cafe. • This square constitutes the neuralgic center of the dream of Aeneas Silvio Piccolomini, Pope Pius II, who entrusted Bernardo Rossellino and Leon Battista Alberti with the project of converting the modest native village of the pope, Corsignano, into the ideal Renaissance town. The jewel of this remodeling of the old medieval village would be the square, headed by the Santa Maria Assunta co-cathedral, which was given an orientation that conferring the protagonist role; Next to it is the Piccolomini Palace, with its sturdy, padded stone façade, in front of the beautiful Pozzo dei Cani, and closing the plaza, the Borgia Palace, donated by the pope to Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia. The work lasted only three years, employing about twenty thousand people. The project, which had to be extended to the rest of the city, was only partially completed, but still gave way to one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany and all over Italy.

  • Pienza is touted as a "model city of the Renaissance from the rice board," which you absolutely have to see. Well, it is a nice little town and also the much-vaunted place with the ensemble of two palaces and the church is ... Nice, and not really preserved that great. You can take part in a visit to the Val d 'Orcia; Montalcino and Montepulciano are not far away ... But to accept a longer journey to Pienza, I can not recommend. Personally, I was a little disappointed ...

  • Another jewel of Tuscan renaissance architecture, this square is certainly the major attraction of the village of Pienza, together with the magnificent view of the Val d'orcia that is from the nearby Belvedere.

  • Nice piazza with cathedral, palace, and city hall. It was decorated for Christmas with a tree and a fire in the middle of the square. Head to the left of the cathedral for amazing views of the countryside along the city walls.
  • We occasionaly meet the competence of local. It seems that they roll the cheese in their hand and try to reach the goal on a curve way. Very interesting.
  • Trendy place on the beautiful square with a nice view of the beautiful terrace probably. They serve some antipasti around apero time.
  • Pienza! What a great little town! Don’t forget the cheese everyone! And the wine. And the views and the little streets and.. just enjoy!!
  • One of our favorite parts of our two week excursion
