Cathedral, Pienza

4.5
#1 of 14 in Historic Sites in Pienza
Siena Cathedral is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church, and now dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.
Previously the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Siena, from the 15th century the Archdiocese of Siena, it is now that of the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino.
The cathedral itself was originally designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from a hexagonal base with supporting columns. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The nave is separated from the two aisles by semicircular arches. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city's founders, Senius and Aschius.
The origins of the first structure are obscure and shrouded in legend. There was a 9th-century church with bishop's palace at the present location. In December 1058 a synod was held in this church resulting in the election of pope Nicholas II and the deposition of the antipope Benedict X.

  • Beautiful dome, organic to the perspective project of the square, as he had imagined Pio II. The façade, deliberately geometric without excessive frills, is representative of the Renaissance period, while inside, almost Gothic, stand out works by artists like the Vecchietta and Matteo di Giovanni. To see.

  • We were visiting the village of Pienza and we paused for a visit to the Duomo. Inside there are marbles and paintings very beautiful and dediciche to famous people of our history.

  • It is located in the Plaza Pío II, in the heart of the city, having been built between 1459 and 1462 by the Tuscan architect Bernardo Rossellino, for the pope's desire, in his desire to create the ideal city. It is built in Renaissance style, but with different variations. The facade, in travertine, is framed by four pilasters, highlighting the coat of arms with the emblem of the Holy See. The interior is divided into three naves and is decorated with paintings by Giovanni di Paolo, Matteo di Giovanni, Lorenzo Vecchietta and Sano di Pietro. The crypt houses several sculptural pieces and a baptismal font from the Rossellino workshop. The church visit is free. Opening hours are 08.30 to 13.00 and 14.30 to 19.00 hours.

  • Nice Duomo in a typical old little Italian village. The outside and the inside are quite simple, not very decorated, there is not a lot of sculptures / paintings. As in most Italian cities: the entrance is free, the center of the city is car prohibited, so you have to park outside of the city.
  • Wonderful cathedral in reneissance style. Imposant exterior beautiful walls and excellent interior. You must visit it into this historical town.
  • Excelent!
  • Beautiful cathedral worth stopping inside to see
  • Of White stone that externally makes it bright and inside elegant and sober inside is the Duomo of Pienza. The Cathedral of the Assumption represents, better than any other monument or palace, the thought of Pope Pius II. Having lived in Germany for years, Pope Pius II knew German Hellenkirchen (in Italian churches in Sala) and therefore wanted his cathedral to have the same three aisons. At The same time Pope Pius II was fascinated by the gothic lines of the Franciscan churches species of Assisi (from which the central eye and the two-sloping roof) and the "rich but sober" lines of the churches of San Sebastiano in Mantua and Santa Maria Novella in Florence designed by Leon Battista Alberti. These were the themes he gave to Rossellino to design the new Cathedral. Inside there are the works of Giovanni di Paolo, Matteo di Giovanni, Bernardo Rosellino, Lorenzo Vecchietta, Sano di Pietro and Matteo di Giovanni.
