  • Built in 1459 by order of Pope Pius II on the ruins of the Romanesque church of Santa Maria. Wonderful the altarpieces there preserved. Enjoy to take a look at the crypt, where is possible to admire numerous sculptures of the ancient Church.

  • Beautiful in the fact that it isn't overdone with gilt. As you move towards the alter you will get a bit discombobulated as it is leaning, not like the Tower of Pisa, but it leans. Worth a visit.  more »
  • Facing the Central Valley is the altar of the Church of the Valley beautiful seen from the back of the Church, the Cathedral just altar is heavily, on the back is on the cliff edge from irrelevant, down to about 20 cm from the half of the Church which is flawed.

  • Beautiful cathedral worth stopping inside to see
  • The complex, which stands on the site of the ancient Church of Santa Maria, but oriented differently, was thought to be placed scenically at the town's main square, the Piazza Pio II, and was made at the behest of Pope Pius II Piccolomini between 1459 and the 1462 by Bernardo Rossellino in the course of the renovation of the city. Despite being one of the most important monuments of the Italian Renaissance, for some details as the gable roof and the central eye is reminiscent of the Franciscan Gothic churches, but also the German Hallenkirchens Pius II had seen in his travels ( especially for the extreme brightness of the glass); the collection, however, is influenced by the Renaissance and of Leon Battista Alberti, today considered the real INSPIRER of Pienza and the Duomo. The tripartite façade in travertine marble was designed by Rossellino. Four pilasters divide it into three zones corresponding to internal naves. A stringcourse divide the facade into two zones; at the bottom there are the three entrance doors, the top three arches supported by columns. Under the side arches were created niche classic reminiscence in the central one opens an oculus. On the pediment of the façade dominates the emblem with the emblem of the Holy See of Pius II Piccolomini. The outer walls of the Church and the apse go Gothic Windows that allow a large and impressive internal brightness. Very slender Bell Tower was damaged by an earthquake in 1545 and restored in 1570. the belfry houses 4 bells. the large, note solb3, cast in 1400 by a foundry of Cortona; the second, solb3 note, cast by Luigi Magni in third and fourth, with 900 bells have respectively notes sol3 and lab3. The Interior is still structurally related to the Gothic style, is divided into three naves of the same height, the nave is just wider than the side. Two rows of pillars with engaged columns huddled and decorated capitals, raised above the pillars, divide the naves. The apse is divided into three chapels, the largest welcomes the chorus. Two other chapels are formed by the arms of the cruise, each comes with a large window. All this part underwent a failure due to the condition of the soil on which stand the perimeter walls of the apse since its construction. The temple is decorated with paintings, executed by order of Pius II by the most famous artists of the time.

  • The Cathedral of the assumption of The crypt of St John more than a crypt the Church of St. John is all that remains of the ancient Church of Santa Maria. Down in the lower church for a door and a scale of 36 very large steps. In the middle two columns support the whole Cathedral. The light, going from three large Windows, floods and illuminates the four altars and around the temple to the baptismal ... Pius II Commentaries book XXIV

  • Beautiful church, but more for its façade than anything else. The interior decorations are pretty sparse, and even the altar appears "anonymous".

  • Beautiful church built by Pope Pius II Piccolomini. Under the Cathedral you can visit an exhibition on the works of restoration and stabilization of the Cathedral and you can go into "labyrinths".
