  • The Church hosts inside a copy of Raphael's Sistine Madonna, a painting that alone is worth a treatise on art history with the two Angels at the foot of the Virgin which are in fact the most famous image of the entire painting by Raphael.

  • The Benedictine monks who commissioned an altarpiece with Raffaello Sanzio first in the 1500 century knew well that, with this image added their church a great treasure. The picture came up to hang in 1513, and was there until 1754, when it chose to sell the work to the Polish King August III. When the image is nevertheless still can be seen in the Chiesa de San Sisto, so is due to the fact that there was carried out a copy of the image, which still can be seen. On the Internet I have found information about the entire two painters such as authors of the copy: Pietro Antonio Avanzini (1656-1733) who had died 21 years before the picture was sold to King August, but why can he have performed his copy long before. But also the painter Giuseppe Nogari (1699-1763) is credited as the one who has done the copy. Which of the two painters who performed the copy I have not been able to find out. In addition to the Rafaellos image, which is, moreover, because of the location high up are finding it difficult to view and photograph properly, there are also plenty of other reasons to visit this fine Church. When approaching the Church from Via San Sisto, you come to the first of the great portal flanked by two ionic columns, and then get into the little farm, where you have the Church's façade in front of them. The history of the Church goes back to the Benedictine Abbey which was o pført here 852 – 874. The original church was demolished in 1490, there had to be a bigger Church to. The architect Alessio Tramello, which is also known as the architect for the Piacenzas of Santa Maria in Campagna, stood for the task, which was completed in 1511. The Church's façade, decorated with sculptures, bas-reliefs and Ionian half pillars are, however, from 1591 with restorations in 1755 and 1969. Inside is a three-aisled Basilica of San Sisto with Romanesque arches and side chapels with works of art, as it is the day I visited the Church was pretty hard or impossible to see properly because of light in the Church. Here are works by, among others, Sebastiano Antonio Novelli, Campi, Giovani Battista Pittoni, Gervasio Gatti, Jacopo Palma II, Alessandro Mazzola Bedoli, Giuseppe Nuvolone, Simone Moschino, Giovanni Battista Tagliasacchi, Carlo Procaccini, Tadeo Zuccari and several others. Are you interested in churches and ecclesiastical art, has an awful lot to offer at Piacenza; a town with one magnificent Church after another. San Sisto is one of them.

  • Another great church in Piacenza. Specifically the ceiling decoration was very nice. Here is the tomb of Margaret of Austria  more »
  • There are open rooms to all sides of the church where kids were running gear around. To me a bit off the normal "sightseeing" route but close enough to other sites like .
  • Antique fortified 16th century Church and Benedictine monastery, built in place and on the same area of a previous monastic structure of the 9th-10th century. It is a richly decorated structure-a beautiful wooden choir is proof-that has known moments of greatest splendor: the altar was enriched by Ssstina Madonna by Raphael, sold in ' 700 and today in a German Museum. It is accessed via a portal that opens onto a large cloister with arcades.
