  • The Red domes with the background of the sky from Palermo with bullets to the typical architecture of mosques are a symbol of the city. The Church was built in 1142 by Ruggero II on what had been the site of an earlier temple dedicated to mercury, later to become Gregorian monastery in the 6th century, later converted into a mosque. It is one of the finest examples of Arab-Norman architecture in Palermo. The Church, survived with a few ruins of the monastery and cloister square, had great importance in Norman times as it was the seat of the Abbot, confessor of the King and Royal family members were buried in graveyards. This structure is typical of the Arabic architecture, is full of symbolism: the cube represents the Earth, the profane, and the hemisphere represents the sky, the sacred.

  • I had high expectations when I decided to visit this place, but have all been dashed. Admission fee (thankfully free for teachers) to see two rooms badly maintained (enter pigeons and other animals leave their droppings). Worth consideration only the garden and the cloister. That's enough to watch the building from outside.

  • The Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti disappoint announced from the outside. The Church is Deconsecrated and little remains of the Interior if not a bald environment. The cloister is interesting but not cared enough.

  • Very nice old garden, rich history but only some remains.
  • It was a very scary ruin . Nothing inside the church just empty walls. Like a cave. €6 to enter is a waste
  • Beautiful garden! The ticket is a bit over priced considering the non existing touristic services... Not even a short description in English.
  • Enchanting place in romantic style where different cultures are mixed together in a unique relaxing atmosphere
  • Way overpriced for a small garden and empty church
