Chiesa di Santa Maria della Catena, Palermo

3.8
Santa Maria della Catena is a church in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. The church was built in 1490-1520, designed by Matteo Carnilivari. The name derives from the presence, on one of the walls, of a chain (Italian: catena) which closed the Cala port. The work mixes late Renaissance style and Gothic-Catalan style, the latter especially visible in the three-part arcaded loggia located at the top of a staircase (added in 1845). The interior is also late-Gothic, and includes a cavanas of Nativity with Adoration of the Shephers (17th century) from an unknown master, 16th century bas-reliefs attributed to Vincenzo and Antonello Gagini, who also sculpted the capitals of the columns and the entrance portals.Annexed to the church is a 1602 convent house, which, starting from 1844, has been the seat of the State Archive.

  • We stopped near the Church when our cabby give us to the Park "Villa Garibaldi". So we went to the Park, absolutely no credence to this church and having only a couple of pics (and our guide-Trooper drew our attention to it: from jogging to horse farther and farther ...). Then I read a little about this church and realized that she still deserved our attention. Alas (((

  • Beautiful.
  • ancient church with interesting architecture
  • Church Santa Maria della Catena. Interesting Gothic Catholic Church, located between marine and pizza porta felice. Santa Maria della Catena's name derives from a long chain that from an outside wall of the Church marked the boundary of the harbour of the city.

  • Attributed to Matteo Carnelivari, this church is preceded by a large portico square at three low-bed arcades, behind which is the portal of which the cornice is adorned with a bas-relief of V. Gagini. Along the port up to piazza Fonderia, and this is the picturesque district of the Vucciria market.
