Chiesa del Gesu, Palermo

4.7
Gaze at the endless display of Baroque architecture and adornments inside Chiesa del Gesu. Hidden inside a misleadingly plain exterior, detailed carved marble inlays cover the walls like a mosaic among statues and columns. Descend into the comparatively plain crypt, and after passing through the porticoed courtyard, view a large collection of portraits in the attached museum housed in the Biblioteca Comunale. Put Chiesa del Gesu and other Palermo attractions into our Palermo trip itinerary website , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • The Church of Jesus or the Church of Santa Maria de Jesus, also known as House Professes, is one of the most important baroque churches of Palermo and Sicily. A luxury absurd, has a wonderful craftsmanship and restored in 2009. The Jesuits who arrived in Palermo in 1549, began in the late 16th century the construction of the Church attaches to the mother house (House Professa). The place where it was erected the Church was traditionally considered a refuge for hermits, in particular Are Calogero have lived there in a cave: still early Christian Catacombs. Note on the organ. Built in 1954 by the company Tamburini of Crema; an instrument with 4 keyboards, pedals and more than 4000 radial tubes
