Chiesa del Gesù, Palermo

4.7
#5 of 52 in Historic Sites in Palermo
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Gaze at the endless display of Baroque architecture and adornments inside Chiesa del Gesù. Hidden inside a misleadingly plain exterior, detailed carved marble inlays cover the walls like a mosaic among statues and columns. Descend into the comparatively plain crypt, and after passing through the porticoed courtyard, view a large collection of portraits in the attached museum housed in the Biblioteca Comunale. Put Chiesa del Gesù and other Palermo attractions into our Palermo vacation generator, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • A good traveller who stops by to visit Palermo can not miss the Church of Jesus also known as Casa Professa. This church simple façade decorated with statues including the "Madonna della Grotta" that dates back to 700 inside is a treasure trove of Baroque decoration that lets the visitor simply plunged into amazement. Personally I consider this church one of the (many) jewels of Palermo.

  • Historical documentation on date this place of worship in the late 19th century after Christ. The complex entrusted to the Jesuits in the mid sixteenth century completed this masterpiece one hundred years later. The bombing in ' 43 have demolished the roof and Randazzo's frescoes were replaced by contemporary authors. In this building with three bays with eight chapels, art worked fior from Randazzo, Morabitti, Van Dyck, Rosalia and Pietro Novelli, until the great Gagini. Is a riot of colours, stuccoes, frescoes, statues and polychrome serpottiani, brands such as the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, perhaps this is more beautiful and more important from an historical point of view, around 1200 had jurisdiction up to Marsala, with the Church of San Giovanni (with the hypogeum of the Sibyl's Cave). Already the outside, austere but solid, decorated with statues and above the door the statue of Santa Maria della Grotta (cave or underground located beneath the altar of Saint Anne), is the urge to enter. Once past the entrance door you open vision in one of the most beautiful and important Sicilian baroque. The vestry is to visit the beautiful Cabinet surrounding the entire wall, the work of a Jesuit who lived in the convent in ' 600. Go up to the first floor where the oratory and you can't believe the work done by a 13-year-old Serpotta, last of the famous family of decorators. Pity that in 1866 Garibaldi by removing each jurisdiction and property to the Sicilian Church, espoliò the Oratory of his paintings to make them converge in the National Museum. Concluded between the myriad of things to see in the capital of Trinacria, this is one of those "unmissable" Manuela and Alessandro Gori

  • Located right at the entrance to the popular district of Ballaro ', the Church of Jesus, or better say professed house, is a gem in the Centre of Palermo. Unlike the Imperial crypt, where the visitor is left to itself, the visit to this church is organized in a perfect way. We paid 5 euro and we could enjoy of a kind and we prepared Guide describing admirably in this exuberant triumph of Baroque Palermo. The price includes a visit to the sacristy, crypt and the oratory with the works of Serpotta. Visit magnificent
