Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum, Paestum

Once an ancient Greek city founded by colonists, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum touts three well-preserved temples dedicated to Hera and Poseidon. The Doric columns that once held the roofs stand tall, though only a portion of the roofs remain. The city's defensive walls of the city are partially standing, along with 24 square watchtowers. Four of the original 28 towers were destroyed when the addition of an 18th-century road cut the city in two. Wander the ruins freely on your own, but wear comfortable walking shoes for the dusty terrain. • Before the show was in a single room enlarged. There are: the Roman section (reconstruction with graphs of the city, urbanism, public monuments, sacred spaces, private, necropolis); the sculptures of the sanctuary of Hera at Sele (architectural and sculptural decorations from the excavations of the Heraion of Sele. Fragments of pottery, vases, bone and metal objects that the faithful were offering to the shrine); the tomb of the diver (of inestimable historic and artistic value of the Museum. There are painted plates of the tomb of the diver is the only example of Greek painting of Magna Greece. Burial slabs closed by a flat roof, with frescoes on the interior walls. There is painted man who dives into water that expresses the passage from life to death). The cost of the ticket is Open excavations and Archaeological Park Museum + 9euros Mon-Sun 8e30-19e30

  • The entrance fee (9 euros) also includes a visit to the archaeological site. Interesting Museum, very well kept, with hundreds of exhibits of various periods and panels and movies units in Italian and English. Especially the section dedicated to the grave of the "Diver". Recommended!

  • Very nice relatively small museum, with the metopes of the Heraion Argive (sanctuary of Hera) found nearby. They are situated on top of an inner wall, displayed in the same fashion as if they were on a Greek temple. A lot of graves, including 'la tomba del tuffatore' (The diver's tomb). On the second storey, you'll find the archeological finds of Roman Paestum.
  • Very interesting
