Prato della Valle, Padua

#3 of 116 in Things to do in Padua
Take a breather from your tour of the city and watch the world go by at Prato della Valle, a 90 sq m (969 sq ft) elliptical square, the largest such public space in the country and one of the biggest in Europe. The square was built in 1775 on the site of what used to be a theater and fairground. The present layout includes a large central grassy area, which is surrounded by a statue-lined canal and a broad expanse of flagstones. On the weekends the square is the site of a popular market, but on all other days this space attracts joggers, cyclers, rollerbladers, and passing tourists stopping by for a quick rest and a few snapshots. The square is said to be at its most photogenic in the evening. Prato della Valle is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Padua Edition.

The perfect place to catch your forces during the tour. Quiet, beautiful view, and dozens of beautiful sculptures cause from the time as if he was in place.

Actually the square impresses by its size, it is interesting to see it basically because of this. Statues that surround the area of water are pretty, aren't bad, the attention, especially because there are a lot. Small bridges are also good and the source that there is in the Middle, is no big deal, pretty sosa. The fact of having put a score of three, although as I say is nice (part of it) and I think it's visit obliged if you go to Padua, is for two reasons: first, the plaza has an enooooorme asphalt around the lawn area, and has marks on the ground to locate booths... We think that maybe if there is a market or stalls will have much more charm, but so far in August is completely empty (in the paved area just public baths of these prefabricated structures scattered across the square) and the area of asphalt (with these wc) much disfigures the landscape. He hoped that there was more grass, flowers, or stones paved in that area... Some beautiful decoration, and not asphalt. And the second reason is related to the expectations I had: after seeing the opinions of others on this platform and read what the biggest square of Italy and the second largest in Europe... I expected to find me something lovely and not so.

How many beautiful statues curcondano this lawn. What colors and what a contrast between the white of the statues, the blue sky, the green grass and the colors of the surrounding houses. Belloooooo!

  • Amazing historic place. Perfect location to arrange meetings with friends. Every Saturday there's a big market taking place where u can buy cheaper fruits, vegetables, plants, clothes, household goods or even some random interesting stuff.
  • Such lively place! I lost count of the variety of food I tried. Fresh and delicious. And the location is like cherry on top!
  • Only passed through briefly on way to Basilica of St. Anthony but it looks very impressive.
  • Was here with my cousin, relaxed and enjoyed 10 minutes under a tree recharging.
  • I have never seen such a big square in my life. All the sculptures were very unique and vivid. This place is an absolute beauty!
