INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Padua

(4.6/5 based on 70+ reviews on the web)
Learn about the stargazers of yore at INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, an astronomical observatory built in a 9th-century defense tower, prison, and torture chamber. After the former castle was abandoned in the 13th century, the tower was reclaimed in 1761 as an observatory, with observation rooms specifically built as vantage points of the galaxy. This was one of the first observatories to make use of Benjamin Franklin's 1750 discovery of the lightening rod. In 1942, a new observatory was created, home to the huge telescope, Galileo. It was then that the tower was converted into a museum, preserving and exhibiting the tools of observation used during the prior 250 years. Note that tours are in Italian only, but an English-language handout helps you follow along. • From Lady in the work, I find that the guided tour at the Observatory is an important step to get to know the city of Padua. The current headquarters of the Astronomical Observatory (no, there are no more active telescopes now but "only" ancient astronomical instruments masterfully restored) was in ran the centuries a focal point of city life and the scientific community. Don't miss the guided tour, conducted by highly trained experts! and if the weather permits, you can also enjoy the view of the city, going up on the balcony.

  • A short distance from the Center is the Astronomical Observatory of Padova. Not the biggest attraction, but the place worth a walk. The Observatory is located next to a Ship and this makes it even more interesting the view especially at sunset!

  • Lovely visit at the Observatory. The guides have well explained the history of the building and what it has been throughout the centuries. The rooms reflect with frescoes and with what equipment the Observatory has been over the centuries. Great scenery visible from the last terrace.
